As we wind down to the final few episodes of Switched at Birth, we hope that Bay and Daphne’s stories can come full circle to indicate where these two young women will take the next chapter of their adult lives. It seems that they have finally decided on career paths which make them both happy, but there is still some uncertainty going forward. It only seems appropriate that one final piece of the puzzle brings their journey full circle. By the end of the episode, that’s exactly what Daphne is made aware of.
Bay is outraged that Noelle has been stealing her designs, for which she is unapologetic. In Noelle’s mind her actions are justified because she was stressed, and Bay is not ready for her own chair. She decides to give Bay what she wants just to prove it. It’s not enough that Bay is feeling the pressure from trying to lure in clients, she doesn’t need her parents dropping in and scaring them away. When a client comes in with a questionable ID and a ton of cash, Bay feels it’s too good a risk not to take to keep her spot in the studio. Bay is completely ignorant that the tattoo she is asked to draw is a local gang sign, and has to do major damage control so that the kid’s dad doesn’t press charges. The whole experience opens Noelle and Bay up to a new understanding.
Entering into a new phase of their lives makes John and Kathryn realize they have to make a new understanding as well. After walking in on John watching some adult content, Kathryn realizes they might need some spark back in their relationship. She tries and fails to help John, not knowing that John has been having problems for some time. Per Luca’s recommendation for an herbal remedy, John and Kathryn realize that they simply need to adjust the way they do things moving forward.
Regina and Luca’s relationship is in the honeymoon stage. They may be different in age, but they’re good together. Luca even helps Regina find an investor for Regina’s expansion of The Cracked Mug. What he neglects to tell her is that the investor is his father. At least that’s what Luca says, until his dad informs Regina that Luca is in fact the investor. Let’s not forget what happened the last time Regina mixed business with pleasure. Tying Luca’s money to her business would be a long-term investment that Luca could lend to their future. It’s just better that Regina say she wants to make an expansion on her own, for both of their sakes.
Now that things on campus have calmed down a bit, and Iris is finally eating again, Daphne wants to focus on her career. Her path to medical school is a curvy one, but her passion never wavers. That’s exactly why on her first day volunteering at the campus health center, Dr. Jackson, the man who fired Daphne from the clinic she used to work in, is happy to see her. Stealing medication from the clinic isn’t a pretty part of Daphne’s past, but Dr. Jackson knows one bad action doesn’t make her a bad person. Truth be told, Dr. Jackson needs Daphne more than he is willing to admit. Certain side effects from his aging health are affecting him physically. Which means he shouldn’t be as hands-on with patients as he used to be. After some resistance, Daphne convinces him that the time might be right for him to transition to teaching. His mind is as sharp as ever, so why shouldn’t he train the next generation of doctors?
Another person in need of Daphne’s persistent attitude is Mingo. After everything that happened with the Black Student Union, Mingo is in a bad place. Understanding the ignorance of his actions which started all of this is has been a huge blow to his emotional state. He’s now punishing himself by not taking care of his physical health. Daphne can be there for him as a friend, but this is a hole Mingo needs to pull himself out of before being in a real relationship with anyone. Daphne’s come a long way since she first decided to become a doctor. The person she used to be would have handled the situations with Dr. Jackson and Mingo very differently. This was the person she was before Angelo’s death. Now it seems that Angelo has reached out once again from beyond, when at the closing of the hour Daphne meets Angelo’s heart recipient.
This leads us into the 100th episode of Switched at Birth, where Angelo will make one last return to guide his daughters.
