Supernatural ‘We Happy Few’ Review: God Is…Dying?

OK, I’m still reeling after watching the latest Supernatural. Is Chuck dead? I mean come on. He’d only just been introduced. It feels unfair to the character. But well, considering that this is Supernatural, I’m pretty sure He’s bound to come back pretty soon. With literally only one more episode to go, this season of Supernatural is almost over. Though, as a predecessor to the finale, this episode does a pretty good job. Most of the episode was about an all-star team-up between angels, humans, witches and demons. So, that means pretty much all of creation like ever. That’s quite a powerful teamup. Was it enough?

‘We Happy Few’ begins with a long overdue conversation between father and son. Course God has an ego so Lucifer’s not gonna get his way that easily. Lucifer plays the angsty teen part pretty well telling Chuck repeatedly to go screw Himself. But in the end, Lucifer’s demands are pretty childish. All he wants is a sorry from his Father. But Chuck is feeling so self-righteous that He won’t apologize to His own son.

So, it’s up to Sam and Dean to do something. They sit them down for some family therapy. Good enough for any family right? Except well this is one of the oldest and most messed up family. When Sam asks Chuck to be less lordly, he’s like, “But I am the Lord.” Yep, you’re the Lord, but he’s your son. In the end, though it works out, so it’s time to plot against your sister.

So, it begins. Sam, Dean and Lucifer go to all the little ragtag creations of God and convince them to join God. But Rowena’s looking out for her own skin while the angels sort of hate Lucifer after what he did. Meanwhile Crowley’s being mocked by all the demons for being everyone’s bitch. Crowley’s really had it rough this season. He’s been owned by Lucifer, The Darkness and Rowena, so the demons aren’t exactly happy to accept him as their king.

In the end though, after some convincing from Cas himself, the angels do agree. It was great to see Misha Collins back as Cas. It’s really been a while since we saw Cas. Crowley and Rowena agree too. So each one comes packing a horde of demons, witches and angels. Time to kill Amara.

But wait, there’s some yin and yang bullshit and for some reason we can’t kill Amara, only trap her. The Mark of Cain was used to trap her the first time and it’ll be used to trap her again.

There’s a great revelation to be had here: The Mark corrupts anyone who possesses it. First, it corrupted Lucifer. Then it corrupted Dean. But if the two of them can be corrupted, why can’t Amara be corrupted as well? Isn’t that a sensible thought? Maybe she isn’t evil after all. Maybe if they can get the mark off of her, she can become good again? Anyways, now Sam has to possess the mark to lock up Amara since Dean is ‘tainted’.

The parties meet up. As you can guess, they don’t exactly get along between themselves. Crowley hates Lucifer and he hates Rowena. Rowena hates Lucifer and Amara. While Lucifer hates everyone. World’s best alliance ever.

Well anyways, so everyone goes in one by one instead of all by once. The angels smite, the witches…witch and the demons smoke. Amara is weakened but then Lucifer stabs her and she just hits the ground. They just sit around and talk instead of immediately capturing her while she’s weak. Amara blames Chuck for creating the world so He had inferiors and so He could be powerful. And to do that, He locked up Amara. And Chuck agrees too. Except His love for His creations is bigger than the love for His sister. In this time, Amara recovers while they’re locking her up. Then she kills God.

But…no, God is dying, not dead. So, there’s hope after all. But, someone else may be dead: Lucifer. Or is he? I’m getting a vibe that Lucifer is dead while Cas is still alive. We’ll know next episode. Meanwhile, the Amarapocalypse has officially begun and everything’s doomed.

Supernatural airs Wednesdays on 9/8c on The CW.
