The Supergirl Season 2 finale wrapped up the major storylines from the season, provided service to continuing storylines and also set up some story points for fans to look forward to during the hiatus. ‘Nevertheless, She Persisted’ did all this in spades and you can read about it on TVOM’s review. In this column, I want to discuss the tag scene and other foreshadowing toward what might be over the horizon in Supergirl Season 3. SPOILER ALERT!
Hints regarding villains
In the closing minutes of the Supergirl Season 2 Final, we flashed back thirty-five years to Krypton’s destruction. We saw that the House of El weren’t the only ones launching babies into space on the day Krypton exploded. Another sect, these hooded and robed and acting very furtive, placed an infant in a pod. Saying it would reign on Earth, one one of those sending the baby away pained blood on its cheek, a clear sign of villainy. This could be one of several Kryptonian villains we have seen over the years. She could be Ursa who fought at the side of General Zod in Richard Donner’s Superman II. She could also be Faora, one of General Zod’s commanders and coconspirators in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. She could even be Mala or Lilo, lesser known Kryptonians who appeared at the side of villainous conquerors in animation. Whoever she is, she had decades in the yellow sun to scheme and grow powerful.
In the second act, while sparring with Supergirl, Superman showed her a martial arts move he said he learned on Warworld. Warworld is a an artificial world ruled by interstellar despot Mongul. Sometimes, Mongul merely presides over gladiatorial combat in an arena. Sometimes he leads an army, with Warworld possessing massive laser weapons. And sometimes his sister Mongal acts as a rival, or coregent. Since this show likes to pit Supergirl against lady villains, this writer would propose the appearance of Mongal rather than Mongul. Also, Superman’s reference wasn’t the first hint about Mongal. In the Alien Fightclub episode ‘Survivors,’ one of the alien fighters was Mongul’s champion from the gladiatorial arena. In literature, we would call these hits foreshadowing, and this writer would like to Mongal appear in the show.
Other hints
M’Gann M’Orzz told J’Onn she could stay for a while. Perhaps their storyline will continue into next season. Alex proposed to Maggie; we know their storyline is continuing into next season. And finally, Mon-El disappeared down a wormhole in a spacepod while suffering from led poisoning. There are storylines in the comics where the Legion of Superheroes from 1000 years in the future frees Mon-El from the Phantom Zone to cure him from led poisoning. During a visit to the Fortress of Solitude in an earlier episode, we saw a Legion flight ring, so the Legion exists in the cannon. We could see them travel back in time to cure Mon-El and send him back to Earth.
Also, having M’Gann M’Orzz make her own way back to earth, saying she’ll stay around, would make it easier for Cisco and Gipsy from the Flash to pop over and ask for her help with faking Iris’ death. I’m just sayin’. Miss Martian is back, now we don’t need the additional complication of the Legends and their trusty spaceship the Waverider.
The Flash season finale is tonight on the CW. Both Supergirl and The Flash will return next fall.
