Suits Season 1 Episode 6 Review: “Tricks of the Trade”

Suits

Innocent until proven guilty. Truer words can never be said for this episode of Suits. Mike and Harvey helped an innocent woman named Gabby Stone clear her name when she was busted, for lack of a better word, for illegal insider trading. When I watched the scene with Gabby, Mike, and Harvey at the Morello Assessment Management office, it was heart-breaking to see Gabby trying to prove her innocence by finding the tip sheet that got her into this mess. I think that Mike and Harvey wanted to help her, but given that they represented Morello Assessment, they couldn’t help her find the person responsible for framing her for the illegal trade. However, they helped her in the end when the real culprit was found.

I also felt a bit nervous for Mike when he saw that woman that he took the LSATs for at the firm. Good thing she didn’t see Mike walking down the hall with Harvey or else she would’ve blown his cover as a fraud. The scene with Harvey imagining Mike in drag was kind of funny because I could also see Mike dressed as a woman. He could be like the Bearded Lady from America’s Got Talent, without the beard, of course.

I really enjoyed watching Jessica quote Top Gun to Harvey at the end of the episode when she bought him tickets to the Yankee game so he could go see it with Louis. Harvey sounded just like Mike when he said “very funny” under his breath as he left Jessica’s office. You are so pwned, Harvey. So pwned. I have a feeling that Harvey would rather go see the game with Mike rather than Louis, but I think that Harvey would go with Louis anyway to avoid being reprimanded by Jessica, who, in a way, is like the mother that Harvey wished he had.

The other comedic scene in this episode was seeing drunk Mike go to Harvey’s condo to give him the trades information (written on a cocktail napkin, no less). When Mike called Harvey “dude,” earning him a death glare from Harvey and an annoyed “Don’t ever call me ‘dude'” from the older lawyer, I was very highly amused. The humor and sarcasm that the writers worked into the script was ingenious. I also liked Harvey’s impression of Sylvester Stallone; it was very spot-on. I was a bit surprised that Louis would ask Jessica to see King Lear after finding the tickets to the play on his desk right off the bat. I had thought that he would want to take Donna given his admiration of her, but there is the chance of him being refused by the fiery redhead; maybe he just wanted to thank Jessica for getting him the tickets.

I was a little confused when I watched the scene with Mike and Harvey going back to Morello Assessment to look for Gabby. The outside shot showed the building in broad daylight, with the sun still shining, but when the camera shifted to Mike walking down the hallway, it was nighttime. I get that time flies when one is not paying attention, but that is a bit of a stretch.

At the end of the episode, Mike finally told Rachel that he was the one who helped her friend Teresa cheat on the LSATs, leaving the paralegal angry and disappointed. I wished that Rachel would just swallow her anger for a few minutes and let Mike explain why he did what he did, but I do understand her storming off after the cat came out of the bag. Hopefully things will be better in the next episode.
