Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer is tearing the internet into pieces right now. The question is will it have enough momentum to unseat Thor: Ragnarok’s trailer? I’m thinking “no” because it’s a holiday weekend but you never know, it could very well catch up. It got to over 4 million views within the first couple of hours so I wouldn’t count it out just yet. P.S. if you haven’t seen the trailer it’s amazing. Right now the internet is trying to gather clues from every single frame possible but there’s one observation I like best which came from Comicbook today. It turns out that the trailers for The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens have very similar beginnings.
Both trailers begin with a fade in on a mysterious locale – which is promptly interrupted by a desperate figure popping into view. InThe Force Awakens, the moment features John Boyega’s Finn, jumping up awake after crashing on Jakku, gasping for air, still dressed in his stormtrooper outfit. In The Last Jedi teaser, the locale is seemingly the planet where Rey discovered Luke Skywalker, and Rey is now the figure popping into view, gasping desperately for air. What’s interesting is the change in perspective: Finn is jumping up in his trailer, while Rey is falling down.
For those who aren’t film school geeks: it could be argued that these two different shots indicate two very different trajectories for the characters/story arcs of the respective films. In other words: Force Awakens was about the rise of new heroes, while The Last Jedi will see those heroes fall, in some form or fashion.
