Sleepy Hollow has had its ups and downs since the first season. The show is still predictable (to an extent), but tonight’s episode, however, is not so much predictable but confirms a few lingering suspicions.
The hour begins with Ichabod standing in the Archives. Everything is dark and stormy (the beginning of every mystery/suspense story) with the thunder and the lightning. Ichabod then sees a blur run past his peripheral vision and thinks it’s Abbie. He then sees a little girl (Molly) standing in front of him and then finds himself back in Jenny’s trailer.
I chuckled when Ichabod gave Jenny the bag of frozen peas for her wrist and put the bag of frozen chicken wings on his head. It’s nice to see the show retain its humor in this fourth season. That and have Agent Thomas “inherit” some of Abbie’s “culinary skills.” The woman can’t cook to save her life. I also can’t imagine Ichabod as a sports fan, but I do give him credit for trying to cover up the fact that he’s looking for the next Witness when Agent Thomas caught him talking to Jenny on the phone.
The scene where Jake looked over Ichabod’s shoulder as the latter was reading a book on dreams and prophecies was hilarious as well. I completely understood Alex’s point of view when she told Jake that Ichabod is keeping secrets. I love the whole “when one doesn’t understand something one looks for answers” thing that Alex has going on. It reminds me of Detective Decker in a way.
This week’s villain, or villains, I should say, are a trio of witches. Apparently, they used to work for General Washington to track down spies and serve as human lie detectors. The spell that they used to remove tongues from those that lie kind of grossed me out. I mean a live snake coming out of your mouth? That is just wrong in so many ways. On the other hand, that is an interesting way to find out if someone is lying or not, much like what one of the Dyer sisters did to Ichabod. Snake tongue removal aside of course.
Ichabod then made a shocking discovery while assisting Agent Thomas on a case involving the dead witch named Moll Dyer. The agent’s daughter Molly is the next Witness (or Abbie 2.0 if you will). The child was mute during the first episode and for most of this episode until she saw Ichabod. It was then that the little girl started to speak. I applaud Ichabod for not springing the “your daughter is the next Witness in the battle against evil” to Agent Thomas yet. Then again, I suspect that it will have to happen sooner or later. Oh, one last thing: Hello, Abraham/Headless Horseman!
