Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 9 Review: “One Life”

When Sleepy Hollow went on a mid-season break back in November, I was this close to giving up on the show cause I figured that there’s no more story left to tell. I was proven wrong of course when Ichabod decided to go on a one-man mission to bring Abbie back from wherever she is when she sacrificed herself by blowing up Pandora’s tree along with herself in this week’s episode.

I knew right off the bat that the man riding the motorcycle is none other than Ichabod Crane. I was impressed by his handling of the motorized vehicle given that there were no motorcycles back in the colonial era and that the only time that Ichabod rode on a motorcycle was when Abbie was the one at the helm, or handlebars, if you will. So kudos, Ichabod, you now officially know how to ride a motorbike.

The scene where Ichabod was using the Lydian jug to try and bring Abbie back, he was met with Agent Foster which confused me. How did she know that Ichabod was at Pandora’s former lair? There was no explanation for her sudden appearance unless I’m missing something here. If I did, please tell me, I’m all ears.

Meanwhile, Pandora tried to cheer up her undead hubby out of his moody funk, but her efforts are for naught because he blamed the whole Abbie taking the Eye of Horus thing on Pandora. The Hidden One told his sorceress wife that if she doesn’t get the Eye back, then he won’t be suffering alone. Wow, talk about troubles in paradise. Someone call the Marriage Ref!

As the hour went on, there were moments that intrigued me. The first being Abbie appearing in a mist-like spirit form to both Ichabod and Agent Foster, asking them, or in this case, Ichabod, to help her. That and the whole mirror image insignia thing with their arms. There’s also the part where Ichabod doesn’t know how to read instructions on how to prepare microwave lasagna. For a guy who reads a lot of books throughout his long life, he sure is oblivious when it comes to reading food preparation instructions. It says “microwave” right on the box, Ichabod Crane! Do you need a pair of glasses in order for you to see the word right in front of you?

The part where Jenny thought that Joe was killed by Randall’s goons had me for a moment there, but I had a feeling that the writers wouldn’t kill off his character for Jenny’s sake. The look of pure relief on Jenny’s face when she sees Joe standing in front of her unharmed just tugs at the heartstrings. I’m no Cupid, but these two were made for each other. My heart swelled with joy when Jenny inadvertently confessed her love for Joe back in her trailer and Joe strode over and kissed her with everything that he felt for her. Call me a hopeless romantic but that’s love right there.

I was a bit irked when Betsy Ross refused to help Ichabod come up with a plan to save Nathan Hale, implementing the greater good concept. Sure sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Allowing one life to be taken by the enemy in order to save the lives of those who are dedicated to completing the mission to ensure its success is both noble and cruel at the same time. Then again, as Betsy said, and I’m paraphrasing here, there’s no such thing as miracles.

The scene where Ichabod gave Agent Foster a crowbar to break the mirror in Agent Reynold’s cabin I was sitting there thinking: they know that breaking a mirror, even if it’s to trap the desperation-seeking demoness on the other side, brings seven years bad luck right? Wonder if Ichabod or Agent Foster is superstitious, but I guess we will never get the chance to find out.

I’m also glad to see Agent Foster being recruited to the demon-hunting troupe, but now she’s in the same position as Abbie: having to juggle between her actual job and battle against the supernatural. I think Abbie would be curious as to why Agent Foster is now part of their little group and would have a lot of questions that needs to be answered if and when she is rescued. It was also interesting to find out a little bit about Agent Foster’s past where her parents were supposedly taken by ancient Mayan forces when participating in an archeological dig.

As the hour drew to a close, we find out that there’s going to be a huge Monster Con happening very soon in Sleepy Hollow thanks to Pandora. Good luck dealing with all those demons from around the world! Say “Hi” to Nessie for me if she shows up and the Banshee. We also see that Abbie is very much alive, a little shaken obviously after what she had been through, and is trapped in a place built out of stone. Is this another version of Purgatory? Will Ichabod ever be able to save Abbie? Tune in next Friday at 8pm on FOX to find out!
