Sleepy Hollow Season 3 Episode 6 Review: “This Red Lady from Caribee”

Sleepy Hollow

Prepare to experience paranoia like never before in this week’s episode of Sleepy Hollow. Pandora has unleashed a monster called the Red Lady from Caribee, or Soucouyant, a swarm of blood red wasps that are able to take human form upon the town, creating fear in the hearts of authoritative figures, and it’s up to Team Witness to defeat it.

The scene where Ichabod was at the restaurant with Zoe was a bit awkward. Then again, all first dates are a bit awkward in nature. I found the whole 20 questions thing from Ichabod was a tad unnecessary. It makes him come across as a high school nerd finally getting the chance to date the popular girl. Just be yourself, Ichabod, and you’ll be fine. Katrina didn’t fall in love with you by asking her a million questions now did she? She loved you for you (with the exception of going on a time-travelling rampage to kill you for the death of your son) and Zoe will too if you give her the chance.

Back to the case, after the chaos in Judge Chrysdale’s courtroom at U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services as Ichabod was in the process of making his smuggling/national security incident go away, I was intrigued to find out that Abbie’s ancestor Grace Dixon and Ichabod’s trusted companion Betsy Ross actually met one another when General Washington was stung by a Soucouyant which sent him to a paranoid rage. There may be no Internet or social media networks present way back in Colonial times, but word truly does get around.

I liked the scene where Ichabod figured out the riddle/nursery rhyme in Dixon’s journal. As a writer myself, I like the idea of incorporating double entendres into a piece of writing (while keeping it PG of course). The part where Pandora’s lair is discovered after Abbie did a triangulation of the locations where Judge Chrysdale, the PTA head and Agent Reynolds were attacked by the Soucouyant is fairly well done and the reveal behind Pandora’s monsters was interesting as she plucked each rose blossom from the tree: Secrets, Chaos, Loneliness, Innocence Lost, Death and Fear itself. The sorceress certainly has something big planned after disappearing into the tree’s opening, the question is what and can our favourite Witnesses be able to defeat it?

The part where Abbie used prussic acid to destroy the Soucouyant’s hive was nail-biting. I was afraid that she might get stung by one of the wasps or worse, the whole swarm, but there were no bites on her person as she poured the acid into the hive. This confused me because in nature, when the hive is attacked, the entire swarm of bees or wasps will group together and attack the intruder(s) and yet when Abbie was pouring the acid, none of the wasps attacked her. I understand that it is the norm to not cause injury to the main characters of the show unless it’s absolutely necessary, but at the very least, Abbie should be stung by a wasp to delay her end goal for a certain amount of time so that the scene is more realistic and suspenseful to watch. Just saying.

Pandora may be gone for the time being, but I have a feeling that she will return. Maybe with more reinforcements to help her wreak more havoc upon Sleepy Hollow. Until then, the Witnesses can prepare themselves for what could be the fight of their lives. I’m glad that Ichabod decided to go on a second/first date re-do with Zoe at the end of the episode. Slowing things down and get to know each other in a quiet setting is a perfect way to begin a new relationship. (I still think that deep bow of Ichabods’ is just too much, but it is what it is). The part where they each presented the other with a bouquet of flowers made me laugh a little. I also fear for Jenny as she suffers from a nightmare created from the red gem that was absorbed into her hand after retrieving it from Atticus Nevins. There’s a possibility that Jenny will be taken to the dark side and will go against her sister and the rest of the demon fighting team, but it’s only a theory.
