The USA Network is releasing a powerful new series this fall called “The Sinner.” Creator Derek Simonds has pulled out all of the stops in what we believe will be a timely show that delves into the inexplicable acts of violence that occur without motive or realization of the people who carry them out. This isn’t going to be one of those feel good series. The hour long episodes, from what we can tell are bent on tackling the issue of violence in the story of the main character. Here is what we know about the brand new series so far.
Central plot
The beginning of the series will feature a pivotal pilot that explains the background of the show. A young mother who is suicidal deals with a flood of emotions, memories and visions which seem a hazy dream. She is prayerful as she seems to switch levels of consciousness. She seems to be driven for forces which remain unseen. Quite unexpectedly, she takes a paring knife and brutally murders a man on the beach. The bloody attack takes place in plain view of her son, husband and other people who were enjoying a day at the beach. While the authorities need to give some type of reason for the attack and claim that it is because he wouldn’t turn down his music, she doesn’t understand why it happened to begin with. She offers no explanation of why and doesn’t appear to have a motive. Cora is generally shy and keeps to herself. Her husband Mason wrestles the knife from her after the incident.
We’ll see her story unfold
The premiere will set the tone for the mystery, which will unfold in bits and pieces. A few hints are given in the debut episode with flashbacks to Cora’s past. She tells her father that she doesn’t want her mother to come home from the hospital after giving birth to her younger sister. So far, the plot is heading in the direction of a woman who is dealing with something terribly traumatic in her past, that it caused a post traumatic stress disorder. Her mental illness is a predominant theme and the mystery of unraveling the hows and the whys adds to the suspense and drama.
The cast
Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman are the lead characters with Christopher Abbott playing the part of Cora’s husband. Biel is Cora, who is committed. Pullman is Detective Harry Ambrose who investigates the case thoroughly. He is interested in making sure that the justice system follows through with the most appropriate actions in the case. Although proving her guilt is a slam dunk, he wonders about the mitigating factors that could add a different twist to the outcome of the case. This is a complicated series and Abbot’s contributions give it an extra kick of realism and complexity.
We don’t know precisely why the series has been titled “The Sinner.” It obviously deals with the timely subjects of mental illness and inexplicable acts of violence. Could there be something much darker behind the story? Will this be revealed as the series progresses. These are good questions that we hope will be answered, but until then, we’ll just have to wait. The series is set to premiere on August 2, 2017 at 10:00 pm on the USA network for the first of eight episodes created so far.
