Shay Rudolph has only been acting professionally for the last three years, but she’s already working hard to leave her mark on the industry. Some people may recognize her from her recurring role as Maya Flynn on Lethal Weapon. Now, she’s about to have what might just be her breakout role thanks to Netflix. Shay will portray Stacey McGill in the upcoming reboot of the classic 90s series, The Babysitters Club. The show is set to hit Netflix on July 3rd and it promises to maintain the integrity of the original while adding a little Gen Z twist. 1. She’s A Vegetarian
Shay may be young, but she’s already developed a strong sense of self. She is a big advocate for animal rights and as a result she is a vegetarian. For many people, switching to a vegetarian diet is for health reasons, but others, like Shay, she hopes that it will help to promote fair treatment of animals.
2. She’s A Musician
Acting is Shay’s career path, but it isn’t the only art form she enjoys. She loves to sing and play the piano and she has recently learned to play the guitar as well. At the moment she only performs covers of other artist’s songs, but one day she could eventually work on original music.
3. She Supports The Black Lives Matter Movement
Standing up for your beliefs isn’t always an easy thing to do – especially when you’re putting yourself at risk in your career. However, Shay doesn’t let that stop her for speaking out on the things she feels are important. She has used her platform to support the Black Lives Matter movement as well as LGBT pride month.
4. She Started Her Acting Career On Stage
Shay’s TV work is what many of her fans are familiar with, but she actually started her acting career on the stage. She started doing musical theater in the first grade which is when she realized how much she loved to act. In fifth grade, she earned a role in her schools production of the Wizard of Oz.
5. She’s A Rupi Kuar Fan
Over the last several years, Rupi Kuar has become has gone from a social media poet to a New York Time’s Best Selling Author. Her work resonates with millions of people and her words have helped to inspire and heal. Shay is a fan of Rupi’s work and lives by one of her quotes which says, “You don’t just wake up and become the butterfly”.
6. She Likes To Read
Shay loves learning about new things and one of her favorite ways to do this is by reading. Since, like most people, she’s been spending a lot of extra time in the house lately, she’s been using this as an opportunity to catch up on some good points. One of her favorite quarantine reads has been The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba.
7. She Was Familiar With The Babysitters Club Before Getting The Role
Shay wasn’t born yet when the original Babysitters Club show was on TV, but she said she was still familiar with series. She said, “I was definitely aware of the books because the Scholastic Book Fairs at my elementary school always carried some of the graphic novels! All of my friends read them, and I was constantly asking if I could borrow one of their copies since I thought the books were so cool.”
8. She’s Really Close With Her Family
Having a strong foundation is important for everyone, but this is particularly true for children in the entertainment industry. Shay is fortunate to have a strong relationship with her family that keeps her grounded. Her older sister is one of her best friends and her parents are her biggest fans.
9. She’s From San Diego
Shay was born and raised in San Diego and she loves her city. When she’s home in San Diego she loves enjoying local restaurants and says her favorite is Plant Power. When describing her favorite day she said, “I like to go walking around with my friends and go into some local bookstores to look at poetry books, go to The San Diego Vintage Flea Market, and maybe even the beach to watch a beautiful, peachy sunset! And who doesn’t love a good hand-dipped ice cream cone from Mr. Frostie to end your day?”
10. She Advises Other Young Actors To Get Comfortable With Rejection
Being an actor means you have to have pretty thick skin. No matter how talented you are, you’ll probably hear the word ‘no’ an awful lot. However, Shay encourages other young actors not to take it personally when they aren’t chosen for roles. The reality is that not being chosen doesn’t always have to do with how talented you are.
