It’s official. The once a year event, the annual Golden Globes, have a new host for 2018. Seth Meyers, who is host of Late Night, is taking on the role of hosting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s prestigious 75th Golden Globe Awards. The 2018 awards ceremony will happen on January 7 and will be broadcast live on NBC. A statement from the HEPA confirmed the decision, stating that The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was excited to have Meyers host the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The association president Meher Tatna released a statement describing Myers as having the innate natural ability to charm audiences and a great comedic wit.
The Golden Globe award is an American film accolade which is bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association on the hottest talent and best in film and TV in recognition of their excellence. The annual award ceremony is a glitzy celebrity red carpet affair. The coveted role of MC and host has been held in the past by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais and most recently Jimmy Fallon. Now Seth Meyers is set to step into those shoes.
Up until 2009 The Golden Globes were, for the most part, conducted without a host. Ricky Gervais then took the role of fronting the awards for three years until he was succeeded by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and they held the reins for a further three years. In 2017 Jimmy Fallon took the helm but his star is on the wane after a soft interview with candidate Trump met with universal derision.
Seth Meyers is a writer-comedian who hosts an NBC late night chat show that has earned him strong reviews for his biting satire and vocal criticism of the Trump presidency. The divided political climate has really reinvigorated the Late Night TV Shows and Meyers has been one of those who has seen a rise in his popularity and his critical acclaim. His segment, A Closer Look, often tackles the Trump Administration. He is a Saturday Night Live Alumni and worked on the flag ship American comedy show as a head writer and as a presenter of the Weekend Update segment.
Although this is his first time hosting the Golden Globes, Meyers is no stranger to the role of compere of award ceremonies. He previously held that honor when he hosted the 64th and 66th Primetime Emmy Awards for which he received praise. In 2014 he was described by the Slate as having “a steady hand and reliable charm”. Famously his roast of Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner back in 2012 had former President Obama cracking up but left then citizen Trump less amused.
According to Variety magazine, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were also approached to return to host the awards this year but they declined the offer. It has also been rumoured that Tiffany Haddish and Ellen DeGeneres were contacted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association but both also refused the offer.
The Golden Globes will be held on January 7 in the Beverly Hilton and NBC will air the show live from 8PM ET.
