Sasha Pieterse, star of Pretty Little Liars, has been quite brave in sharing the struggles she’s had with her increasing weight gain. If you’re up on how people treat celebrities then you’ll understand just how critical they can be and how unfair their criticisms can be at times. If a celebrity gains even a pound in the wrong spot or does anything other than look good and act a certain way then critics and fans pounce on them and tend to be quite harsh in their estimations of what a celebrity should look like and how they should act. What people don’t seem to realize is that celebrities are just as human as anyone and have to withstand more in a single year of their lives than many would have to deal with in a lifetime. Being overly critical of celebrities is not just outrageous, it’s also quite hurtful and might explain why some of them go down dark paths that lead to alcohol, drugs, and other destructive behaviors.
Thankfully this isn’t the case with Sasha as she’s identified just why she’s been gaining weight and has been taking steps to at least mitigate the effects. She’s been diagnosed with Polycisytic Ovary Syndrome, which is a hormonal disorder that tends to affect women of child-bearing age and can lead to a bevy of fertility issues. It also has the unwanted effect of causing massive weight gain that can go unchecked if a woman doesn’t fully understand the disorder and what to do about it. What happens is that the disorder makes it nearly impossible for the body to use insulin in the proper way, which then allows insulin and sugars to build up in the bloodstream. Without being able to use the insulin properly the starches and sugars that are introduced into the body will continue to pile up, promoting weight gain and other problems that could arise from this condition.
Even after finding this out it’s likely that a lot of fans will still jump right back on the critical bandwagon and deride Sasha for her continued weight gain, which is hardly helpful and tends to be the sign of a rather shallow mind. But thankfully Sasha, now that she knows about PCOS, can at least takes steps towards arresting her weight gain and can possibly find ways to keep the disorder under control. It will no doubt be a test each and every day to make sure that she’s doing everything right and be something she has to continually live with, but now that she understands it a little better she will no doubt be able to find ways to live with it.
As to the opinions of critics, fans, and any others that think they might have handle on what she’s going through and still feel justified in spewing their opinions, it’s fair to say that until they truly understand the disorder and the effects it can have on a person they don’t know half as much as they think they do.
