At San Diego Comic Con this year, I was able to meet and speak with lots of stars and producers from all of my favorite shows. In the press room for The CW’s The 100, which I cover weekly, I was able to speak to Richard Harmon (John Murphy) about the show, his character, and what’s coming up next.
This was Richard Harmon’s first San Diego Comic-Con, and he seemed to have a lot of fun being there. At our table, he walked around and greeted every single one of us individually, which in my limited experience with events such as these, I know is not common.
First, Harmon shared with us a bit about the path that Murphy has taken to get to where he is. “He’s following his own path,” Harmon said. Harmon also told us that he trusts Murphy’s path, because he knows the character to have a “good moral compass.” Several other characters on The 100 have followed a “heroes path” to get where they are, but Harmon contends that Murphy’s is different. “He’s following the path that’s right for him, and I think we can expect him to continue to do that.”
Though we all know that Murphy has found himself a life-partner in Emori, I asked Harmon about his relationships going forward. I was not necessarily referencing just Emori, but with the other characters as well, and how those relationships are evolving. “[Murphy]’s learning not to shut people out as much as he did in the beginning,” Harmon said. Though Harmon believes Murphy probably could handle things alone, Murphy feels differently. “I think maybe he’s coming to the conclusion that it’s better to have some allies out there,” Harmon said. What’s cool and different about Murphy no longer being a loner, is that other character are coming to him, rather than vice versa.
In addition to the broad stroke relationship talk, Harmon also stated that Murphy and Clarke have a “newfound respect” for each other, following their big team-up toward the end of Season 3. Personally, that was a favorite pairing of mine in Season 3, and hope to see more of it.
Harmon also stated later, in the panel, that he and Monty (Christopher Larkin) have never had dialogue together, and that he hopes that is remedied in Season 3.
It was a pleasure speaking with and meeting Richard Harmon at San Diego Comic-Con. Hopefully you’ve find this information enlightening!
