It’s been a little while since I posted a “Rise of the Machines” article but now that it’s the end of the month, why not? And no, this isn’t an April fool’s gag. Apparently Connecticut lawmakers want to be able to arm their Police drones (I didn’t even know there were Police drones) with lethal weapons. This would be a first in the United States. While I’m sure we’ve got some top secret lethal weapon drone action stuff taking place as we speak, there’s no way any of us have caught a little police drawn shooting off missiles to catch bandits in our neighborhoods.
While Connecticut makes moves to let police weaponize drones, other states such as Virginia and Maine have banned the practice. North Dakota allows police drones to use “less lethal” weapons such as stun guns. Civil rights groups are up in arms over the proposal and are hoping the bill doesn’t turn into law.
“We would be setting a dangerous precedent,” said ACLU of Connecticut Executive Director David McGuire. “It is really concerning and outrageous that that’s being considered in our state legislature. Lethal force raises this to a level of real heightened concern.”
Just think, once the drones are able to think for themselves who do you think their logical target is going to be? That’s right, Donald Trump. Just kidding Donald. It’ll be all of us. We are so screwed people.
