And no not the Katy Perry kind or even The Beach Boys kind. I’m talking about David Lee Roth’s “California Girls.” Maybe it’s because I just heard the song in my car. Maybe because it’s 2017 and I seriously long for the 80s but I just gotta hand it to that song for being hands down one of the most fun songs I’ve ever heard. It’s just so “not serious.” It’s just so “California beachy.” Every single time I hear this song I immediately think of 80s people wearing bathing suits zooming down the pavement in Venice Beach on roller skates, not roller blades, roller SKATES.
I’m not even from California (even though I lived there for a bit) and that’s the vision I get. Plus when I watch this video I’m really taken back to a time and place that seemed “happier.” I think it’s because I was young. When you’re an adult the world is always going to hell and there’s always something to complain about. To me, the 80s was fun. It was Van Halen, Rocky III and Topps baseball cards. And despite this song not being a Van Halen song it’s the David Lee Roth we all grew up on and loved.
So let’s take a moment to appreciate the 80s and this classic anthem it produced. Thanks for your time.
