The Real Reason Dr. Evil Used Ill-Tempered Sea Bass In Austin Powers

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is celebration its 20th anniversary this week so naturally people are reminiscing with some great stories.  My favorite story of the day has to involve the fact that the movie had to cover up Mike Meyers’ butt cheeks in order to avoid an R-rating.  Considering how much other sexual innuendos there were in the film, it’s comical that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Another juicy tidbit that we picked up today revolves around those pesky ill-tempered sea bass used in the movie, or should I say not used.   In Dr. Evil’s “death scenario” during the first Austin Powers movie, he desperately wanted sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads, but he had to make due with ill-tempered sea bass instead. It made for a hilarious twist on the traditional super villain death trap.  But as it turns out there’s a real reason that sharks weren’t used.  According to Mike Meyers,

The ill-tempted sea bass was from having no money when we wanted sharks. Jay and I were, like, ‘Well, what can we do?’ And the effects guy was like, ‘We can make the water bubble…’

Pretty funny.  Check out the scene below:
