Golf is never going to be as exciting as it is in Happy Gilmore. We know this. Players will never be allowed to wear shorts, drink beer, or punch other players on the tour. However, ever since Tiger Woods stepped foot on the putting green the sport has certainly risen in popularity. And with a new crop of fresh talent leading the way taking selfies, going on funny trips, and letting fans into their public lives, the game is certainly more dramatic and “visible” than it’s ever been.
However, when you watch golf on television you still see the same quiet tone from announcers. Everything is hush hush, analytical and frankly boring. There’s still not a time where I can watch golf for over an hour and not keel off to sleep. But that all changed recently.
When I got wind of a Justin Thomas hole in one I thought I’d check it out because you know, hole in ones aren’t that often. However it wasn’t the hole in one that impressed me. It was the announcer. Using the same “goooooooaaaaaaal!” tone as that guy who announces soccer does, this guy decided to do his own version with “Hooooooooooooooole in One!” If we had more of this in golf I’d be way more committed to watching.
