Here are Porgs Dancing to the Cantina Band Song

For your viewing pleasure here are some Porgs dancing to the cantina band song, or some version of it. So far it doesn’t seem like Porgs have taken off the way Ewoks did for Return of the Jedi, and perhaps it’s for the best. They’re not exactly as sentient as the Ewoks and fashioning a movie around them wouldn’t really be something that could help a director’s career. A short cartoon might be possible, but anything other than that would be tantamount to committing oneself to something that might only be feasible if a person was going to perform a documentary of the Star Wars wildlife. Now that would be something to see.

The Porgs would be very low on the list as far as interest I still think since there’s not much to them. They’re avian creatures that live on the cliffsides of Ahch-To, they mimic whatever sounds they hear, and they lay eggs. They also tend to infest whatever area they happen to find with their nests. There’s sure to be more about them that a writer could possibly discern and create but apart from that they’re kind of simple creatures. Now if you were to pan around the Star Wars universe and planet-hop from one world to another throughout the galaxy you might find that there are a lot of other species that are just as interesting as the Porgs, if not more so.

Rancors for instance are a little more interesting but they’re also more high-risk since they’re a lot bigger and a lot meaner than any Porg. Rancors tend to be found on a few planets, Dathomir for one, and even Tattoine where they’re used as guard animals in some cases or for amusement such as in Jabba’s palace. The Sarlaac would be an interesting animal to do a story on since they have a pretty interesting history. They’re basically parasites when they’re young and are born from spores that are released after the parasite feeds on enough unwitting victims. That would make a great story and would be able to be told in a transitory way. Other animals like krayt dragons, rontos, dewbacks, mynocks, and various other animals all give themselves up to better stories than Porgs since they’re established and can be used in so many different places. If Porgs are only native to Ahch-To then that kind of limits their usefulness in the stories.

Really and truly they’re a gimmick that was brought out and so far hasn’t worked. Kids might like them because they’re cute and they did manage to invoke a few laughs when they were The Last Jedi but apart from that they were kind of useless. The last laugh about them that anyone can remember is when one of them was plastered to the window of the Millennium Falcon when Chewbacca was piloting through the mineral tunnels. Apart from that they could have blended into the scenery and no one would have given them a second glance. So really, clips like these are why Porgs are still memorable at all.
