Although Snoke did not get much screen-time in The Force Awakens, it seems clear that he is supposed to be a figure of importance in the narrative. Since there is no clear connection between him and one of the existing characters in the Star Wars setting, this has resulted in numerous fan theories about who he is supposed to be. After all, while it is possible for Snoke to be nothing more than a new character created for the new Star Wars movies, there are a lot of Star Wars fans who are convinced that someone so important must have shown up at some point, meaning that they believe Snoke to be a new face for an existing character.
Of course, as more information comes out about the new Star Wars movies, some fan theories will receive a boost whereas other fan theories will be dragged beneath the metaphorical waves. For example, some Star Wars fans have speculated that Snoke is Ezra Bridger from Star Wars Rebels on the basis that said character seemed to have disappeared from the Star Wars setting following the timeline of the TV show, though it is important to note that there are other potential explanations such as the people behind the Star Wars setting wanting to wait for Star Wars Rebels to conclude before putting him in more Star Wars material.
Regardless, the speculation that Snoke is Ezra Bridger has been sunk because the Star Wars Rebel executive producer Dave Filoni has outright stated that it is not true, though he acknowledged that there are no particular reason within the Star Wars setting that it could not be true. Since Filoni would be in a position to know, it seems clear that one line of speculation regarding Snoke can now be laid to rest.
Who Is Snoke?
With that said, there are still numerous examples of fan theories about Snoke that remain to be debunked. For example, there is speculation that he is a botched clone of Emperor Palpatine, which seems to be fueled by the fact that the previous Expanded Universe included the Dark Empire comic books. For those who have never heard of those comic books, Dark Empire saw the Emperor returning to life by possessing a clone that had been prepared for that purpose, leading a resurgent faction of the Empire with new superweapons against the New Republic, and planning to possess Leia’s unborn child, which are plotlines that seem to share some basic similarities with what has been happening in the new Star Wars movies.
Other examples of speculation can range from the banal to the spectacular. Some Star Wars fans have speculated that Snoke is Darth Vader’s attendant Vaneé from Rogue One, which is not a particularly stirring idea to say the least. In contrast, other Star Wars fans have speculated that Snoke is none other than Mace Windu based on the fact that the viewers never saw him die on the screen. Granted, he fell from a great distance after being electrocuted by Palpatine, which should be more than enough to kill a normal human, but the thing about Jedi Knights is that they tend to be much better at surviving the unsurvivable than normal humans, particularly when they are as strong as Mace Windu was supposed to be.
Regardless, there is no real evidence that can be used to prove Snoke’s real identity at this point in time, assuming that he even has one. As the new Star Wars movies come out, it seems probable that Snoke will step forward into the spotlight, which in turn, means that Star Wars fans will learn more about him that can be used to either support or sink their various lines of speculation. Something that should make for a fun time ahead.
