The only soft drink I’ve ever known to be the face of the “geek” world was Jolt cola and I think it’s been at least 20 years since we’ve seen one of those. But it looks like Kwangdong Pharmaceutical is trying to get into the minds of video game players all around the world with their new concoction. Drinks HP and MP were created for those who enjoy gaming, but also as a way to help cut sugar consumption.
The Korea Times reports that the drinks have 120 kilocalories each, and the company says this is 30 percent lower than other carbonated drinks available in South Korea. HP and MP are positioning themselves as healthier alternatives. The company has also brought in Korean cosplay collective Spiral Cats to help promote the beverages.
HP not only contains grape and aronia juice, but also 100 milligrams of the amino acid taurine, which supposedly helps with things like neurological development and regulating mineral levels in blood. MP is a fizzy apple juice drink with 100 milligrams of theanine, which is found in teas and which could help with relaxation.
It’s too early to tell if these will be the new drinks of a gaming generation but it looks like the marketing process is a successful one to start. Getting attractive cosplayers always helps your cause. The real question is whether or not this product makes it internationally. Only time will tell.
