True to form, The Originals continues to amaze viewers with the complicated family relationships at its core. Klaus and Kol especially blew me away with their raw scenes that potentially resolved centuries of bad blood between them. Of course, this newfound brotherly love may not last for long.
Kol is the boy who cried wolf in his family. His loyalty flip-flops whenever it’s convenient for him, but now when he needs someone on his side, he shouldn’t be surprised at the reaction Klaus and Rebekah initially give him. By accepting Finn’s task to get Klaus’ blood for him, Kol acts selfishly once again. It isn’t until he and Klaus have that screaming match that the air between them is cleared. In the process, Kol is finally welcomed into the inner circle of Klaus’ trusted family members.
Klaus repeated what Elijah always says, that “family is power,” but at this point the Mikaelson family stands divided as always. It’s hard to tell where Freya stands in this mix as she first goes to visit Finn. I get that Finn is the only sibling who ever actually knew her, but I thought she was going to be above the petty behavior of attacking her own family members. By helping Finn locate Hope, she’s no better than anyone else. Really now, how creepy was she when she said “You have to let some things die so that others might live.” This does not sound like the loving sister that saved Rebekah last week.
We did learn a little bit about Freya’s past and her rocky relationship with their Aunt Dahlia, which probably only serves as a warning of Dahlia’s arrival sooner or later. Maybe by the time she does come to town, all the Mikaelsons could finally work together. At least whoever is still standing. With this crowd, you never know who will backstab each other next.
Finn’s intentions in going after Hope are purely selfish. He might think this could be a way to get his beloved sister Freya off the hook with Dahlia if they hand over Klaus’ firstborn but there’s obviously a lot more to this story. Not-so-subtle hints were dropped about Hope’s supernatural status like a forehead cut healing and the car shutting down before reaching the house that’s about to explode. So far Cami is the only one aware of these things, but it makes sense that if Hope isn’t a werewolf, she at least inherited Esther’s magic. This could be a blessing or a curse going forward. After all, she’s still a baby so she won’t have complete control over everything but so far her protective instincts are solid.
Hayley and Jackson decide they need to move up their wedding as soon as possible after Finn planned a vampire attack on the wolves. Jackson is so sweet, finishing the crib he started building before Hope was supposedly killed. So why do I get the bad feeling that he’s possibly too good to be true? Klaus already told Elijah he’ll allow Hayley to go through with her unification ceremony but after that, Jackson’s future isn’t so certain. If Klaus does kill Jackson, that’ll only be bad news for everyone. Pitting Hayley against Klaus could be interesting but not if it means severing ties between Hayley and the Mikaelsons (Elijah especially) forever. Baby Hope would be caught in the middle, and she deserves as close to a normal family as she can get.
Now let’s talk about that explosive ending. If we didn’t already know Yusuf Gatewood was promoted to series regular, I’d be hopeful that this was the end for Finn. On the other hand, Daniel Sharman’s future as Kol is probably numbered. I know Kol wasn’t in the house that Elijah blew up, but I’m just talking about the characters overall. Here’s to hoping someone can undo the hex on Kol before it’s too late!
Notable quotables:
-”This family makes me want to murder people.” – Klaus summing up the series in one sentence
-”She doesn’t just live. She hunts.” – Freya’s chilling warning about their Aunt Dahlia
