The Opening Scene to the 1990 Version of Stephen King’s “It” Is Pretty Chilling

Given the amount of attention that new version of It is getting, we cannot help but to be reminded that in 1990 there was a TV version of the book which starred Tim Curry as the terrifying clown Pennywise.   While there’s no doubt in my mind that the new version is going to freak people out (as it’s intended) to, one can’t help but wonder if the 1990 version would still hold up today.  So I decided to share the opening scene with you guys.

You’ll have to ignore the credits and the laundry blowing in the wind because it’ll remind you that might be watching L.A. Law, Thirty Something, Seinfeld, or just about nearly any show that existed during this time period.

The true answer to “can this scene hold up today?” is “Absolutely NOT.  In today’s movies this scene would be chopped in half.  The music wouldn’t be so weird.  It wouldn’t look like a documentary and the over dramatic screaming would probably get eliminated in the first place.  But I will say this.  Tim Curry is awesome here.  While I don’t think it would hold up today, it does carry a great deal of nostalgia for us old farts in their late 30s.

Like I said in the title, it’s “chilling” but that doesn’t mean it’s that scary.
