James Franco wears the ’70s well in the new HBO series “The Deuce.” It’s a new show that features the real feeling of that era. The trailer pulls some hot scenes that give us a juicy peek at what we can expect from it. Here is everything that we know about the new show that is set to be released in early Fall of 2017.
Double the trouble from Franco
In the trailer for the New HBO series, James Franco plays the role of twins. The plot of the story is centered around mob influenced pornography in the city of New York. The era in time is the early ’80s, but Franco’s characters look more like transplants from the preceding decade. The trailer is filled with girls being arrested, cops trying to bust them and Franco strolling around like he’s the big dog on the block. The retro ‘stache works somehow and the choice of wardrobe gives him the appearance of a sleazy porn peddler.
The music moves it forward
Throughout the trailer we’re entertained by “Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield. It gives us the sense that we can expect something similar to what we’ve seen on “Wire,” which also featured the song. The music is effective in setting the overall tone of the trailer and it takes us back in time, making the whole thing seem like a trip to yesteryear in a bad part of town. It even reveals footage of Times Square, when it was a rough area to be in.
Predominant themes
If the trailer is any indication, we’ll see plenty of criminal activity littered with porn, law enforcement, investigations, some real bad dudes and some very good music. If it’s dirty and challenges the moral fiber of the nation, it looks like it’s going to show up on the series.
Characters
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Pernell Walker join Franco in the show. Both of Franco’s characters are mob influenced pornographers. Gyllenhaal playes the part of a prostitute who’s working at Times’ Square. In an interesting twist, we’ll see some faces from “[easyazon_link identifier=”B005NFJAWG” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]The Wire[/easyazon_link]” including Chris Bauer, Larry Gilliard, Jr. and Gbenga Akinnagba.
Will it be a Hit?
“The Deuce” will be an ongoing tale of urban crime and from what we can tell, it’s going to include some topics that will be on the close side of taboo, but will it be worth watching? Considering the cast, they don’t generally do flops. HBO is not in the habit of showing series without remarkable potential. They trailer runs smoothly and it generates a lot of excitement. We have every reason to believe that it’s going to be a smashing success.
The multi-crime environment gives the writers a lot of different directions to take the series and it appears that the action is going to keep rolling. Franco and Gyllenhaal are both capable actors that have an affinity for pulling off a variety of different characters and making them believable. It will be interesting to find out how similar or different Franco’s dual roles will be to one another. We don’t have long to wait as “The Deuce” will make it’s debut on September 10, 2017 on HBO.
