Along For The Ride is a documentary detailing the life of famed actor Dennis Hopper. While Hopper passed away in 2010 his story is still one that is set to electrify Hollywood since he was such an interesting and legendary character within the industry. Nick Ebeling has directed this in-depth look at the man and Hopper’s right hand man, Satya De La Manitou, have come together to tell the story of this Hollywood icon and give a better idea of just who he was and what he did for the industry. The documentary is set to be released in early November.
To a lot of us that might have grown up in the 80’s and 90’s he was already settling down a bit and hadn’t been the wild man for a few years, but during his heyday Hopper was someone that was considered to be one of the wildest guys in all of Hollywood. There were times when he didn’t know his lines and yet still nailed a role without even trying. His style was that of a rebel and a disruptor and yet people loved him for it, no matter if he was a bit rowdy and unkempt now and again. His entire being seemed to belong to the party, the thrill, and the ride that was fame right up until he began to get blacklisted in Hollywood.
The reason why he got blacklisted was because he didn’t want to work with those that didn’t allow him to explore the creative process and go by feel instead by script. Hopper was a man that often went sight unseen into a role and didn’t truly respect any director that wanted to essentially micromanage him. That’s understandable really but back in the day it didn’t sit well with a lot of directors and as a result he became shunned in Hollywood and had to turn to different venues to make a living and do what he loved.
The entire time this was happening Satya was at his side and experiencing a great deal of this with Hopper. The things he knows about the man could likely fill a couple of books, but this documentary will no doubt cover some of the best and most important facts of Hopper’s life in a much more obvious manner. Trying to capture the essence of a man like Dennis Hopper is in many ways like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. The effort’s only worth it if you can do it right.
That could be why Satya is here and is willing to tell his side of the story. If anyone knew Hopper at all it would be someone that was by his side at all times and could be relied upon to give an in-depth description of what went on. From the parties to the acting to the everyday life Satya would no doubt be able to give a very descriptive idea of just what went through Hopper’s mind on a regular basis. Something tells me it would be quite a trip just to take a day out of the life of Dennis Hopper.
