It might be the right time for a Starship Troopers reboot simply because it’s the right time for action films. If it was started up now and not released until next summer such a movie might have the advantage of making its way into a hot market where it could do even better than the original did. It might even be feasible to bring back some of the original actors in different roles so as to keep some of the fans interested and make it possible for the film to be something of a nostalgic hit that could attract both old and new fans to the franchise.
If you remember the film came out in 1997 and then started to spawn some very forgettable sequels that continually pitted humanity against the Bugs, the giant arachnid things that were so bent on destroying human kind for some reason. The battle never fully made sense save for the fact that both species were bent on killing one another, but it did make for some memorable moments as the battle and death scenes were very momentous and could get the heart racing as you began to cheer and pull for the remaining soldiers that were fighting for their lives against a superior force that didn’t know the meaning of the word quit. Plus there were some very interesting bug variations that were shown in the film, and there’s still room for more.
At this point the original cast is 21 years older and would need to be shuffled around if they were used at all, but it could be that Starship Troopers receiving a reboot could be beneficial to their careers and quite possibly a return to the war that entertained many back in the day. There are some things that would need to be changed in order to keep it from being quite as campy as it was in the first go-around, but it’s easy to see where things might have to get altered in order to make it into something great. If nothing else it would be a throwback that a lot of people might enjoy and would even get into just for the fun of it. Bringing back Rico, Ace, Dizzy, Carmen, Carl, Zim, and of course the Roughnecks would be a priority since they did manage to make the movie what it was. Whether Neal Patrick Harris and several of the others would even want to come back is up for debate but perhaps for cameos it would be agreeable.
The movie did create a fan base, albeit not a very big one, that would be excited enough to start the buzz about the movie coming back as a reboot. While reboots are definitely the trend and are a hit or miss proposition it still seems that people are willing to take a chance on them and hope that the next version coming out will be the one that rocks the most. Maybe it’s time to see a new Starship Troopers, one that goes back to the beginning again to perhaps explain why the war started in the first place.
