So what’s the latest news out of the Star Wars universe? Today there’s a lot of speculation going on regarding the meaning of Luke’s necklace in The Last Jedi. Many are speculating that he’s hiding something in it. Some say it could be pieces of Darth Vader’s lightsaber.
Making Star Wars, referencing earlier reports that Luke Skywalker had kept “pieces of Darth Vader’s lightsaber” in The Last Jedi, is now claiming that Luke wears necklace with a “red crystal protruding from the bottom of it” in the film.
If Luke Skywalker has the last Darth Vader Kyber crystal, someone like Kylo Ren would really want it. I don’t know why Luke Skywalker doesn’t just destroy it. But he would clearly see that someone as into symbolism as Kylo Ren would be even more of a monster if he possessed it. If it is a story element, will Kylo get it back and stabilize his saber with the power source of his Grandfather’s lightsaber? It doesn’t sound like Kylo is getting it without getting better of Luke Skywalker first though.
OK so now we get to think about this stuff for the next few days. But I have another theory which I know is just way too out there to be true. What if all of this meant nothing? What if since the very first Star Wars film in 1977 there’s never really been a meaningful thing in any of these movies? What if George Lucas was like “This stuff looks pretty darned cool and let’s just let all the fanatics come up with these crazy theories. I just like watching these laser thingies with the cool noises and space ships blowing up.”
I mean sure there’s a screenplay and story lines. But even the creators have to admit that over the past 40 plus years, there are some theories and speculation that just go way beyond the movie and there’s no way they “intended” these things to mean anything in the first place. What if George Lucas was a moron and just liked space?
I know. This isn’t possible but it’s fun to think that perhaps over 50% of the hype and meaning in these movies came from the fans themselves and all the producers are just laughing their way to the banks, literally.
