There has not been a X-Men cartoon in a long time. The last one to come out was Wolverine and the X-Men, which consisted of no more than a single season of 26 episodes in 2009. Some people have wondered about the reason why there has not been a X-Men cartoon in such a long time, but to be honest, the reasons seem to be obvious.
Some people have suggested that Marvel might not have the rights to a X-Men cartoon. However, there are conflicting claims on this matter, which suggest that Marvel still possesses the rights but has refused to make use of them. This would fit with Marvel’s choice to put less emphasis on both X-Men and Fantastic Four, as shown by a serious reduction in X-Men products as well as the outright cancellation of the Fantastic Four comic books. As for why this happened, well, suffice to say that Marvel did not have the best relationship with 20th Century Fox, which bought the rights to make movies as well as live-action TV shows based on a number of Marvel franchises when Marvel was going through rough financial times. In other words, it seems probable that Marvel saw no reason to promote Fox’s movies by releasing products based on the same characters.
Could There Be a New X-Men Cartoon with the Disney Buyout of 20th Century Fox?
However, the recent announcement that Disney will be buying out 20th Century Fox as well as other assets from Rupert Murdoch’s media holdings changes things. After all, Disney owns Marvel, which means that X-Men and the rest of Marvel’s properties are now under the same corporate umbrella once more. As a result, it is not impossible for more X-Men products to start showing up, though for the time being, it is still unclear what will happen as well as whether said characters will be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some manner. After all, since Avengers: Infinity War is coming out soon, that would present the people behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe to make some serious changes to the setting without making nonsense of established facts.
With that said, once the issues have been resolved, it would be nice to see a new X-Men cartoon as well. It has been years and years since the last one came out, but there are still people who remember its predecessors with fondness, not least because both of those cartoons managed to stand out in their own ways. For example, X-Men was interesting in that it took an enormous amount of inspiration from the comic books, so much so that a lot of its episodes were outright adaptations of comic book storylines. In contrast, X-Men: Evolution made use of the same ideas but moved the core characters to a school setting, thus offering something that was both fresh and familiar at the same time. As a result, it is fun to think out how a new X-Men cartoon might distinguish itself from its predecessors, particularly since there has been a fair amount of X-Men-related material released since that time that could serve as inspiration.
