Nashville Season 3 Episode 17 Review: “This Just Ain’t a Good Day for Leavin’”

Nashville

Everyone was on edge in the latest episode of Nashville. Some situations are more distressing than others, and by the end of the day Nashville will have a new addition, and a somber goodbye.

The day should be starting out with promise as Rayna is supposed to host Juliette’s baby shower. Not the easiest thing in the world to do given that, well, it’s Juliette, enough said. Party games are going to have to wait for Rayna once she hears about Sadie’s situation. Sadie and Luke have spent the night at the police station being interrogated after Sadie shot and killed Pete. Though she had a restraining order against him, she has dug herself a deep hole because the gun she used was unregistered. The District Attorney decides not to prosecute Sadie, but that doesn’t mean that her battle is over.

As Rayna is dealing with Sadie, Deacon is left to deal with the girls on his own. After a night of talking and crying, Maddie refuses to talk to Deacon and barricades herself in Scarlett’s room. Teddy is also starting to unravel from the pressure of trying to pay off his escort. The situation has become so bad that he is starting to turn into the new Lamar. When Teddy puts his problems on hold to help Deacon with Maddie, he makes a promise to her that he will not disappear from her life even if Deacon does die. Who would have thought that it would be Teddy who would bring Maddie and Deacon together again? You would think this would inspire Teddy to come up with a better plan to fix his current mess, but instead he just refocuses his payoff plan with his daughters in mind. This is probably going to be just one more mess Rayna is going to have to clean up in between actually getting to spend time with her daughters.

Luke has been pushed back into the limelight given his involvement with Sadie’s situation. To take his mind off of it, Luke has an impromptu meeting with Ron Pope. Excuse me while I have a huge fangirl moment because I have been a Ron Pope fan for a very long time. Okay, deep breath, I’m good now. Luke likes what he hears and decides to sign Ron Pope on the spot (though for the record I’d buy his music no matter what). Luke doesn’t have long to enjoy signing a prominent artist when Sadie comes by to say goodbye. Even though she is legally free, Sadie is emotionally wrecked that she killed a man she once loved. She decides to say goodbye to Nashville for awhile to sort things out, and it looks like we may have seen the last of her for the remainder of the season.

Gunnar is royally ticked off that Scarlett has moved forward in her relationship with Caleb. Rather than express his feelings, he chooses to skulk and pout, which is not exactly something you can hide on a tiny tour bus. Avery refuses to be stuck in the middle of his friends, so he tells Gunnar to stop whining and just be honest with Scarlett. Gunnar finally does speak up and everything that has been unsaid between him and Scarlett for the last two years comes pouring out. When Avery takes off from the tour to be with Juliette, Gunnar and Scarlett are left to perform without him. The timing really couldn’t be more perfect, as Gunnar and Scarlett give a haunting performance displaying their amazing connection. Just as there seems to be hope for a reunion, Scarlett refuses to get sucked back into that vortex and tells Gunnar that it was just a song.

In her current state Juliette seems to have lost all sense of reason. Juliette is a handful on a good day, but take a hormonal Juliette and make her feel ignored, and that is a surefire recipe for disaster. When some guests can’t show up to her baby shower and Juliette hears of Rayna’s drama with Sadie, she truly loses it and trashes her baby shower decorations before canceling the party altogether. Rayna goes over to Juliette’s to apologize to her and gets the brunt of Juliette’s anger before firing back that she too has had a horrible day and is not in the mood to be yelled at. Before either one of them can finish this argument Juliette’s water breaks and it’s time for baby Barkley to be born. Rayna proves to be a loyal friend staying by Juliette’s side in the delivery room (“You’re not being punished, you’re just having a baby”), before Avery arrives to be with his wife and daughter. Surrounded by her new family, which of course includes Emily and Glen, Baby Girl Barkley gets a sweet lullaby from her parents right before she is named. Unfortunately we are going to have to wait until next week to find out what the new little country diva’s name is.

So what do we think Baby Girl Barkley’s name is going to be? Also, Nashville is about to get a new queen when the diva of pop, Christina Aguilera, makes her debut next week.
