This year’s contenders on the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category are consists of four previous winners, two previous nominees, and two first-time nominees. One of them voices Lois Griffin. One of them is a recent Oscar nominee. One of them played Domino. This is a very interesting category and we can’t wait to find out this September 17 if last year’s winner, Kate McKinnon, will reclaim the glory or someone will dethrone her. Here’s my analysis and predictions in this category.
Zazie Beetz – Atlanta
Zazie Beetz plays the role of Van Keefer. This is her first nomination. She submitted the episode “Helen.” Will she win? Maybe. The show performed well in the nominations. Beetz is also currently on the rise since she co-starred in Deadpool 2. Her episode submission also centers mostly on her character. The downside is that she only appeared on four episodes during the second season and the voters might prefer to reward someone who has more screen-time.
Alex Borstein – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Alex Borstein plays the role of Susie Myerson. This is her first nomination for the show. She won a few days ago for her voice-over performance in Family Guy. She submitted the episode “Doink.” Will she win? Possibly. Her recent Emmy win shows that the voters might actually love her. The show performed well in the nominations. She is also playing a character in the entertainment industry which could appeal to the voters. The downside is that she has to overcome the competition in this category.
Aidy Bryant – Saturday Night Live
Aidy Bryant plays various characters in the show. This is her first acting nomination and she previously earned a nod for co-writing a song. She submitted the Chadwick Boseman-hosted episode. Will she win? Maybe. She is best known right now for impersonating Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the voters might vote for her as a protest. The show also performed well in the nominations. Bryant has also been on the show for many seasons already. The downside is that she might vote-split with two of her co-stars who are also nominated in this category.
Betty Gilpin – GLOW
Betty Gilpin plays the role of Debbie Eagan. This is her first nomination. She submitted the episode “Debbie Does Something.” Will she win? Maybe. She is the only cast member of the show who got nominated which means that the voters love her. Her submission features her character on the episode’s main storyline. The show is also nominated in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. The downside is that she has to overcome the competition in this category.
Leslie Jones – Saturday Night Live
Leslie Jones plays various characters in the show. This is her second consecutive nomination. She submitted the Donald Glover-hosted episode. Will she win? Maybe. Jones is still on the rise and currently one of the popular female comedians right now. The show performed well in the nominations. She also gets to do a lot of work during the recent season. The downside is that she might vote-split with two of her co-stars who are also nominated in this category.
Kate McKinnon – Saturday Night Live
Kate McKinnon plays various characters in the show. This is her fifth consecutive nomination and the category’s defending champion. She submitted the Bill Hader-hosted episode. Will she win again? Possibly. Repeat wins usually happen at the Emmys and the voters might choose to honor her again this year. She impersonated a lot of White House figures and the voters might vote her because of that. The show also performed well in the nominations. The downside is that she might vote-split with two of her co-stars who are also nominated in this category.
Laurie Metcalf – Roseanne
Laurie Metcalf plays the role of Jackie Harris. This is her eleventh career nomination and she previously won thrice for this performance during the show’s original run. She submitted the episode “No Country for Old Women.” Will she win? Possibly. The voters might give her a hug for losing an Oscar earlier this year and the controversy that she has to overcome when the show got cancelled due to the titular star’s racist remarks. She also won before in this category and repeat wins can happen. The downside is that some of the voters might not want to give an award for the show since it is titled Roseanne.
Megan Mullally – Will and Grace
Megan Mullally plays the role of Karen Walker. This is her eight nomination for the show and she previously won twice for this performance during the show’s original run. She submitted the episode “Rosario’s Quinceanera.” Will she win? Possibly. She is the only cast member of the show who got nominated which means that they love her. She also won before in this category and repeat wins can happen. She also has a great acting showcase on her episode submission. The downside is that she has to overcome the competition in this category.
VERDICT: My prediction right now is Alex Borstein of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Her recent Emmy win made me confidently think that they love her and they might do the same for this nomination. If there’s any alternative, it could be Kate McKinnon again.
