This year’s contenders on the Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category are consists of four previous winners, one previous nominee, and one first-time nominee. One of them played Lady Mary Crawley. One of them played Carmela Soprano. One of them played Marcia Clark. This is a competitive category and we can’t wait to find out this September 17 about who will follow the steps of last year’s winner, Nicole Kidman. Here’s my analysis and predictions in this category.
Jessica Biel – The Sinner
Jessica Biel played the role of Cora Tannetti. This is her first nomination. Will she win? Possibly. She is playing an against-type character and the voters might be impressed by her range of acting skills shown throughout the eight episodes that she appeared. She also has the name recognition. The downside is that the show is not nominated in the Outstanding Limited Series category.
Laura Dern – The Tale
Laura Dern played the role of Jennfer Fox. This is her seventh career nomination. She won last year for her performance in Big Little Lies. Will she win? Possibly. She is playing a sexual abuse victim and it is the type of character that resonates in this era. The voters might vote for her because of that. Her performance was also critically acclaimed. The movie is also an Outstanding Television Movie contender. The downside is that she has to overcome the competition in this category and this is one of the two nominations for the movie.
Michelle Dockery – Godless
Michelle Dockery played the role of Alice Fletcher. This is her fourth nomination. She previously earned nods for her performance in Downton Abbey. Will she win? Possibly. She is playing a character that is far from Lady Mary Crawley and the voters might be impressed because of that. She is a British actress playing a very convincing American character in the Western era. The show also performed well in the nominations. The downside is that she has to overcome the competition in this category.
Edie Falco – Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders
Edie Falco played the role of Leslie Abramson. This is her fourteenth career nomination. She previously won for her performances in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie. Will she win? Maybe. She is playing a real-life figure and the voters usually go for that. She also has fourth trophies already which shows that the Television Academy loves her. If she wins in this category, she will have the rare distinction of being the first actress who won for acting in a drama series, comedy series, and limited series or movie. The downside is that this is the show’s only nomination.
Regina King – Seven Seconds
Regina King played the role of Latrice Butler. This is her fourth nomination. She previously won twice for her performance in American Crime. Will she win? Possibly. The Television Academy clearly loves her since they were able to give her two consecutive awards for the aforementioned show. This nomination is also considered as a surprise. Her performance was also critically-acclaimed. The downside is that this is the show’s only nomination.
Sarah Paulson – American Horror Story: Cult
Sarah Paulson played the role of Ally Mayfair-Richards. This is her seventh career nomination. She previously won in this category for her performance in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Will she win? Maybe. Paulson is currently on the rise thanks to her being part of the summer blockbuster film Ocean’s 8. Her character also represents fear in the current political climate and it might resonate to the voters. If they were able to watch the tenth episode of the season, they get to see her play another character which showcases her range. The downside is that the show is not an Outstanding Limited Series contender.
VERDICT: My prediction right now is Laura Dern of The Tale. I’m not sure if a lot of voters were able to watch the movie, but it’s a character that resonates in this era. If there’s any alternative, it could be Jessica Biel, Michelle Dockery or Regina King.
