New York City is about to get a big boost to their economy in August of this year. That’s not even the best news. The MTV Video Music Awards is set to return to the city. The televised event is a gala that is highly anticipated because of its zany and hilarious celebrity skits and antics along with the headline stealing performances that it hosts.
Welcome change of venue
Last year, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards took place on August 27th at The Forum. The multi-award winner for the Best Hip Hop video of the year was Kendrick Lamar. The impressive artist snagged awards for Best Visual Effects for “Humble,” Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Direction. Inglewood, California was the fortunate city to host the event but New Yorkers are thrilled to hear the news that the MTV Video Music Awards will be coming to their town on the 20th of August. This gives you a heads up an the new location for 2018.
Another Round for the Big Apple
New York City has hosted the MTV MVAs on quite a few occasions beforehand. Although the locations are alternated, they were held in Madison Square Garden in 2016 and the latest appearance will be the 17th time that New York has been the host for the event. This is exciting news for city officials because the awards will bring in an estimated $50 million more into the economy of the area. This makes them welcome guests for more than one good reason.
Announced in grand style
New York is known for a certain kind of creative energy that comes out in some artistic forms. New Yorkers know how to appreciate this when they see it and just outside Radio City Music Hall, the network made the official announcement with the “moonperson” in full astronaut regalia. It was a good way to let New York City know that this is the venue where the event will take place. New York is the place where art, film and music intersect and it’s the origination zone for the VMAs. This was confirmed by Mayor Bill de Blasio as he joined in celebration of the announcement.
What to expect this year
Looking back over the hilarious and immensely entertaining antics we’ve seen through the years, we’ve seen some side splitting antics along with some hella-good music videos. It’s always good. We remember Miley Cyrus’ eyebrow raising performance that introduced us to twerking, along with Madonna and Britney Spears’ onstage female to female kiss. These are just a few of the many unforgettable moments we could point to. MTV is keeping a firm finger on the pulse of the demographics viewing the show and they’re seeing the biggest growth in viewership coming from the 18 to 34 year group. Expect entertainment that caters to everyone, but to these viewers in particular. It’s time to gear up and get ready for the ceremony. Whether you plan to watch it from the comfort of your own home, or to make your way to the Big Apple, save the date!
