Jim Carrey can get serious in a movie scene, it’s entirely possible if you’ve ever watched some of his movies since despite being the funny man for so long he’s also been known to drop the gags and funny voices and concentrate on the drama for just long enough to show that he’s a person and not a caricature. Any of you that haven’t seen this by now might want to check out a movie that doesn’t feature him pulling a weird or goofy face on the cover, because it is real and he can do drama every bit as good as he does comedy.
Just watch and you’ll see.
5. The Truman Show
Sometimes they really are out to get you, but usually not on such a massive scale. Truman has lived all of his life thinking that he’s got a great job, a loving wife, and then things get turned on their head when he starts to question the world he lives in. Eventually he gets wise to the fact that things aren’t quite right and makes a break for it. But the creator isn’t about to let him go without a fight.
4. Bruce Almighty
Ever wonder what it’s like to be God? Well Bruce got a chance to actually BE God for a little while and figured out that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Between the prayers and the inability to affect free will when he needed to the most he came to the realization that his life had been great before, but was on a collision course with disaster when he started using the easy way to get what he wanted.
3. Man on the Moon
Andy Kaufman was a rather strange fellow but he did manage to make a lot of people laugh and had a certain way about him that was just undeniably charismatic. That didn’t mean that he didn’t have his own share of problems, just like anyone else. But in the celebration of a life that was cut short far too early this movie did some things right while taking artistic license with others, like usual.
2. The Majestic
Stepping into someone else’s shoes isn’t an easy thing to do. When you have amnesia however it becomes a lot simpler, at least until you remember and don’t want to be caught in the lie. This was one of the first all drama films that Carrey was in and he absolutely nailed it. People were no doubt waiting for a punch line or a goofy face but he was straight throughout the entire film. It made an impression.
1. The Number 23
This is not the first time that Jim Carrey has starred in a horror flick but it’s the first one that wasn’t meant to be part comedy. In this one he finds a book that was unknowingly written by him many years ago when he was a troubled young man that had just killed his ex-girlfriend. As the truth continues to unveil itself he finds himself slipping further and further down the rabbit hole of memory until he hits bottom, which is not what he expected.
He can do other things besides just jokes.
