You can tell when Michael Douglas is about to yell since his voice continues to rise and rise until finally it reaches that crescendo and his voice goes off for a few seconds before he calms back down. It’s like one of the many gauges on any number of video games that you have to keep hitting that button until it’s just high enough for something to happen. His voice is like that, you can imagine someone hitting a button inside his mind repeatedly and as fast as they can to elicit this kind of reaction. Barring that he’s a great actor, but not a spur of the moment yeller all the time.
Here are a few of his best.
5. Fatal Attraction
This is probably one of the more innocent scenes in this movie since his raised voice is that of a man having a good time and little else. But of course once that moment is gone you have to realize that stepping out on your wife isn’t a good idea and the woman you’re doing it with could be something less than stable. If nothing else just being with another woman should be enough to know that nothing good can come of this.
4. Wall Street
You just don’t cross Gordon Gekko. You don’t do it. He’s the kind of guy that would make good on his threats in one way or another if you get him riled and he finds out it was you. A man like this is just unstable enough that he can’t be bargained with and can’t be outplayed unless you’re willing to be just as sneaky and underhanded as he is, and that takes skill.
3. Black Rain
He’s got the tough guy attitude but he doesn’t necessarily have the action hero look. He’s really more like the guy that is just grizzled enough and tough enough to make you think that you could take him in a fight. But then of course he’s got enough tricks up his sleeve to go the distance and make your life miserable right up until the moment he takes it.
2. The Ghost and the Darkness
Remington is no joke. He comes in guns hot and steps everyone back, therefore saving the unfortunate soul that was put in charge of building a bridge only to see it plagued by the local wildlife. When you realize that he was a member of the Confederacy though his attitude really starts to come into focus and make more sense considering that he up and left his country to find peace elsewhere.
1. Falling Down
Normally you should just stay out of gang territory, but of course it’s not always that easy to know where the boundaries are and if you’ve crossed them in any way. In that case it’s best to tread softly and carry a big, mean, wooden bat that kind of overpowers a little butterfly knife any day. If the gang member had known how to use it he might have been okay.
Michael Douglas is kind of scary when he yells.
