Harry Potter was the fantasy series of their childhood for a lot of people out there. However, it should be noted that there are plenty of other fantasy movies out there, including a fair number that can be well-suited for said individuals’ particular tastes. Here are five movies that you should consider watching if you liked Harry Potter:
Bridge to Terabithia
Bridge to Terabithia was a movie based on the book of the same name. In short, it was centered around a pair of children who create a fantasy world called Terabithia while ensconced in a tree house. It is interesting to note that the book was based to some extent on the author’s son, who when he was an adult, proceeded to turn it into a screenplay with his mother’s permission because he was a playwright of some skill by that point in time.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the first place that Harry Potter fans should look if they are not satisfied with the movies based on the main series. In part, this is because the movie is set in the same universe, which means that same peculiar charm. However, it should also be noted that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is concerned with events preceding the main series, which should interest a lot of Harry Potter fans out there. Better still, Fantastic Beasts movies are expected to be continued to be made for some time, meaning that there is plenty of material to come.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first Chronicles of Narnia book to have been published. In it, four siblings are sent to the fantasy world of Narnia, where they are charged with overthrowing the tyrannical White Witch with some help from a divine source. There are people who have soured on Chronicles of Narnia because of its treatment of various issues, but The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is nonetheless an important part of the fantasy canon, if there is such a thing.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Percy Jackson & The Olympians is so Harry Potter that it hurts, though to be perfectly hair, the basic premise of Harry Potter wasn’t exactly invented by that series either. Regardless, while Harry Potter featured witches and wizards, the Percy Jackson series is focused on the semi-mortal, semi-divine children of the Greco-Roman pantheon, who have remained active in modern times in that particular setting.
The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass was the first in the His Dark Materials book, which in turn, made it the natural choice for the first book to be turned into a movie. Unfortunately, while the movie’s visuals were so spectacular that they were literally award-winning, the movie met with a mixed response from both secularist organizations, which were miffed by the last-minute changes that softened the book’s criticism of religion, and religious organizations, which were miffed by the perception of an anti-Catholic message. With that said, The Golden Compass was nonetheless an interesting story about an orphan girl setting out in search of her lost friends in a world populated by war-bands of flying witches as well as intelligent polar bears famous for cladding themselves in full-blown plate armor, which made for a rather memorable image to say the least.
