Check Out the First Five Minutes of Ghost in the Shell

Back in high school I took a film class and the one thing that stuck with me was something my teacher said about measuring the quality of a film.  He said that if you’re not “all in” within the first 10 minutes of a movie, chances are likely that you will not be interested in the remainder of the movie.   While I don’t think this applies to every single movie since some take a bit longer than others to develop, I’ve always agreed that this is a pretty solid general rule.  This is why trailers, while great and can pump you up to see a film, are extremely misleading.  They are usually a supercut of highlights from the film so naturally you’ll be intrigued if all you see are the best parts.

I bring up this story because the movie Ghost in the Shell has done something that’s pretty rare.  Scarlett Johansson talks to the camera in this clip to let us know that we have access to the first 5 minutes of her new movie.   I think most of us can agree that the trailers have been excellent.  The hype for the film has been excellent.  Even finding out how some of the props were made has been excellent.

But nothing makes a film more exposed than when you actually release footage like Ghost in the Shell is doing here.   While I don’t want to give away what happens here (you can see for yourself) I will say that the first 5 minutes definitely draws you in.  There’s no doubt about it.
