Ben Affleck Backs Out of Directing Solo Batman Movie

Ben Affleck has recently backed out of directing a solo Batman film.  He was originally named as the director last April by Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara.  His backing down from the director’s chair is obviously disheartening news considering the reputation he’s built up as a director.  However, I personally think this move makes a lot of sense.  First, here’s the actual story and Affleck’s comments.  According to KSAT

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require,” Affleck said in a statement on Monday. “Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.” Affleck added that he is “still in this” and that “we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.” “I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world,” he said.

Let’s try and analyze what this really means.  Affleck’s last film “Live by Night” was a bomb at the box office.  While Batman Vs Superman made over $870 million it was universally panned.  Affleck is playing this one safe.  He can still be the Batman but attaching himself as director and risking bombing his reputation as a director would not be a wise move at this point in his career.  If I’m a betting man, that’s what this is all about.  Affleck will still appear as Batman in the upcoming “Justice League” movie and he still has a chance to solidify himself as a worthy portrayal of The Dark Knight.

However, as a director Affleck is much better off sticking to films that have gotten him respect and acclaim.  Films like The Town and Argo.  Taking on serious projects like these legitimizes Affleck in Hollywood and it doesn’t pigeon hole him into being just another action star which is very well where this could have headed from a reputation standpoint.

Smart move by Mr. Affleck.
