In some ways Crazy Rich Asians seems like an Asian version of Fifty Shades of Grey but without the heavy-handed expectation of sex every time you turn around or kinky happenings that might otherwise taint the movie and draw too big of a correlation. But the difference here is that the main character is already attached to the wealthy man that takes her away to meet his family while on vacation. But the fact that every woman they see wants him and his family is somewhat eccentric, and that he has a dark past, kind of hints at the aforementioned movie in a couple of ways.
Thankfully it proves to be it’s own movie.
10. This is the first all-Asian cast in a Western-produced film in 25 years.
Usually you might see a Caucasian lead or someone else of a different ethnicity to serve as a grounding point. That’s not the case this time as everyone in the film is of some form of Asian descent.
9. The movie is based on a book by the same name.
The book was actually a part of trilogy so based on how this movie does it could be possible that another one might follow it. That does depend on the kind of reception it receives however.
8. There are a few differences in the movie that aren’t in the book.
There are always bound to be differences that happen during the transition of the story from the pages to the big screen, but those in this movie are fairly small unless you’ve happened to read the book.
7. Three of the actors are natives of Malaysia.
Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng all come from a Malaysian background.
6. Several of the actors have shared the screen in a couple of different productions.
Michelle Yeoh and Harry Shum Jr. were seen in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, while Ken Jeong and Constance Wu were seen together in Fresh Off the Boat.
5. It just came out not that long ago.
The film was released earlier this month and has been receiving somewhat mixed reviews at this time largely due to its cast and the somehow controversial nature of only casting one type of ethnicity.
4. The book was published in 2013.
That’s a fairly quick turnaround for a book when it comes to being made into a movie. It could be that someone thought that this was important enough that it needed to be translated onto the big screen with all due haste.
3. Henry Golding is a biracial actor.
He’s spent a great deal of his life in Asia but is not entirely Asian due to his parentage. This however was taken into account despite the fact that he was still cast in the movie.
2. The casting was met with praise and scrutiny.
There’s been some buzz going around about how the casting was done for this film and how the selections were made. In truth every single person in the movie has some Asian heritage, so it’s nothing much to talk about.
1. The film was shot on location in Singapore.
It was shot in Koala Lumpur in April of 2017.
It might be interesting to watch.
