Miss France Iris Mittenaere is Crowned Miss Universe 2017 Winner

There was a collective sigh of relief when Steve Harvey announced the winner of the 2017 65th Miss Universe contest, because he actually got it right this time!  The winner was Miss France.  Iris Mittenaere will wear the crown of Miss Universe until the next pageant crowns someone else.   So what do we know about the newly crowned winner?  Let’s take a look.  First of all, Iris is 24-years-old and was born in Lille, France.  She’s currently a student at University and plans on being a dental surgeon when school is over.  Something tells me that might be on hold for a while.   According to Wikipedia:

When she won the Miss Universe final, she became the first European (official) winner since 1990. She became only the second woman from her country to win the crown after Christiane Martel won in Miss Universe 1953 breaking France’s 63 year title drought. This is only the third time a French woman was among the Top 5 delegates of the Miss Universe competition, after Flora Coquerel in 2015 and Christiane Martel in 1953.

In addition it’s obvious that Iris Mittenaere isn’t the biggest fan of Donald Trump’s immigration ban.  When asked about the situation she was adamant about keeping borders open.   Another interesting fact about Mittenaere is that she loves to cook.  According to her Miss Universe bio:

Mittenaere has always been fond of extreme sports, travelling the world and cooking new French dishes. Fresh, funny and caring is how she would best describe herself. She enjoys making others happy, especially when volunteering at Bienvenue-Tongasoa and Les Bonnes Fées. Mittenaere is honored to be representing France in the upcoming Miss Universe competition.

Below you can see a video of last year’s winner Pia Wurtzbach giving her the crown.   Congrats to Iris!
