The Mindy Project: Chris Messina Returning as Guest Star for Season 5

The Mindy Project

It’s a good news/bad news situation for fans of The Mindy Project, especially for viewers who love Chris Messina’s Danny Castellano. The actor, who has appeared sporadically throughout the comedy’s fourth (and first on Hulu) season, will return to the show for Season 5; however, he won’t be back as a series regular. As TVLine first reported, Messina will be a recurring guest star during The Mindy Project‘s fifth season.

The casting announcement can’t come as a huge shock to fans of the series who have seen Messina’s (and therefore Danny’s) presence on the show extremely reduced this season. Not long after the birth of Mindy and Danny’s son, Leo, Messina’s character went on a road trip to visit his ailing father for several episodes, and when he returned to New York, he and Mindy continued to clash over how they wanted to parent their son, eventually leading them to officially call of their engagement and break up in Season 4’s midseason premiere.

Since Mindy and Danny’s break-up, Messina has appeared as Danny only a couple of times on The Mindy Project, with his last appearance being a few weeks ago when Danny confronted Jody (Garret Dillahunt) after he discovered that his former co-worker had feelings for Mindy. As TVLine notes in its report, Messina’s Danny didn’t even appear in last week’s episode, “Under the Texan Sun, when Mindy dropped Leo off at Danny’s apartment before she left for her trip to see Peter in Texas; instead, Mindy came face-to-face with Danny’s new girlfriend.

Hulu officially renewed The Mindy Project for Season 5 back in May. New episodes of the show air weekly on the streaming site every Tuesday, and its Season 4 finale is slated for Tuesday, July 5.

Mindy Project fans, what do you think of this news? Will you miss having Chris Messina as a constant presence on the show, and do you think this means that Mindy and Danny are officially done for good? Comment below and let us know.
