Back before there was CGI or guys like Andy Serkis who could play every single monster you ever needed to perfection, whenever beasts appeared on camera, they were usually men wearing suits. Such men have achieved cult level statuses of fame because of these roles. If there’s one man we have to pay our respects to, it’s Haruo Nakajima, the man who donned the costume of the original giant electrical lizard, Godzilla.
The original Godzilla dates all the way back to 1954 and was a humongous hit. Nakajima’s life would never be the same again. Now, 88, a documentary called “The Man Who Was Godzilla” is out and it’s a fantastic look at the life of Haruo who’s career began only shortly after World War II.
Nakajima went on to play Godzilla in 12 consecutive films before finally bowing out in 1972. Despite having never showed his face in the film,Nakajima will always go down as a legend in the film industry because of Godzilla.
