There seems to be a huge debate between hardcore fans and casual fans of Marvel as to how overrated the movies they’ve pushed really are. In many cases the movies have been absolutely epic, though the sequels have left a lot to be desired. Introducing each hero has been something grand for fans of all kind to see. With Iron Man it was a welcome to the MCU as it began to build momentum, while with Captain America: The First Avenger it was a promise of things to come. When the Incredible Hulk came on the scene it was more or less an addition to the MCU and not a shining moment, but when Thor appeared Marvel managed to hit another home run. As the franchise continued to roll on however it was evident that it was starting to run out of gas just a bit, at least until the Avengers movie came out and started it all up again. Then the whole thing took off to another level when the post credits showed Thanos, and things began to really heat up. But when it came to the sequels and everything in between matters started to unravel now and again, and it seemed as though the MCU was pushing things a little TOO hard, and was becoming less able to fill the expectations that were being set.
Right now it seems more likely than not that their ability to gross a billion dollars or more per movie seems to come from the fact that more and more people are getting turned on to the idea of what’s going to happen and couldn’t care less about the actual story. Yes, that is possible since the shock factor of the latest movie, Infinity War, was enough to get a lot of people talking and already building the anticipation for the next movie to come.
But if you really want to see how overrated the movies have become, let’s take a quick look at what precipitated this.
Iron Man
As far as the MCU goes Iron Man really kicked things off as he’s one of the founding members of the Avengers, is their resident genius, and he’s less than perfect when it comes to his attitude or his combat savvy. Yet he is one of the most capable members of the team and despite being kind of a jerk at times he still has a strong moral center that he can cling to when he really feels the need. This first film was instrumental in bringing the idea of the Avengers together since Tony was one of the first to show up on the radar. Of course Natasha and Fury were already there, but out ofthe original team he was one of the first on the scene unless you count the failed Hulk excursion years before. No, not Edward Norton’s attempt.
Captain America: The First Avenger
The pieces all had to start falling into place since Iron Man had started the whole thing up. Captain America was not a founding member of the Avengers as people like to think, go ahead and check, but he was vital to the team not too long after they started up. He’s been the boy scout of the Avengers for a long time and really had to be included for the group to exist in a way. Trying to keep Cap out of the movie would have been like trying to part peanut butter and jelly. It’s possible, but it doesn’t work as well.
Thor
As another of the founding members of the Avengers Thor couldn’t be left out. He’s one of the powerhouses of the group and as the oldest and one of the reasons why the Avengers were so successful in their first fight he is a mainstay of the group that they couldn’t do without. The casting for this was perfect in the eyes of many and the initial movie was great since it showed Thor being a bit pompous and having to earn his power back after being exiled. The MCU has really taken a lot of liberties with changing the stories around but to this point at least people have been enjoying them.
Captain America: Civil War
A lot of people were under the impression that this was another Avengers movie, especially given that they were including everyone. But this was more or less the big break that happened in the comics, on a much smaller scale. The issue with the MCU not having any rights to other, very badly needed characters up to this point is that for battles like Civil War the comics included so many more heroes that it was hard to pack them all in. But now that Disney owns a great deal, if not all, of 21st Century Fox, they will have access to a lot more and can possibly make some very epic movies down the line.
Avengers: Infinity War
A lot of people loved Infinity War for its ability to include every Avenger we’ve seen thus far, with a couple of exceptions of course, but some fans wanted to remind others that the initial Infinity War in the comics involved a LOT of heroes and villains and was far more expansive than the movie could ever be. But in the course of the MCU this movie was the most epic by far and hopefully the studio can continue to produce more like it. If not, then their moment of being on top could be in danger at any time since a lot of the movies don’t seem to warrant the kind of money they’re pulling down any longer.
