In the season 3 premiere, Man Seeking Woman delivered “Futon,” an episode about what happens when a new boyfriend tries to infiltrate a girl’s group of friends. This week, “Horse,” flips that scenario around, and shows how it is just as rough for a girl to try and get closer with her boyfriend’s closest friends. While in some aspects, the episodes immediately feels a little repetitive in comparison to the premiere, but Man Seeking Woman just nails all of the small differences between very similar situations. Mike is a very different animal compared to Lucy’s friends, he’s been by Josh’s side through everything the viewers have seen, and so far he hasn’t taken to Josh having a girlfriend well. “Horse,” is no different and right from the start Mike doesn’t even acknowledge Lucy’s presence. He is surprised she is still around and is neglecting to take Josh’s relationship seriously. It’s funny because while Lucy’s friends were brutally honest with her about how they felt about Josh, whereas Mike refuses to address the situation, assuming it will run it’s course. It’s an interesting parallel only because it immediately reveals that this episode won’t be a retread of “Futon.”
“Horse” eventually pushes it’s story forward when Lucy is able to organize a couple of drinks between her, Josh, and Mike. Of course, Josh being stuck at work forces Mike and Lucy into an awkward time of trying to get to know one another. For Mike, this is the worst situation that could have happened because he already doesn’t like Lucy and never wanted to be there in the first place. He is ready to blow his brains out and the unthinkable happens; Lucy discovers they share the interest of making fun of Josh. She begins to reveal secrets Josh entrusted her with and her and Mike realize they can actually tolerate one another’s company. This is another big statement for Man Seeking Woman to make because Lucy is clearly the real deal for Josh, and now Mike is even on board with everything. The fact that she won him over this early on in the season is very telling for the relationship going.
Yet, while Mike and Lucy’s approval of each other is a big step for her relationship with Josh, her misstep in revealing his secrets is not well-received. Josh definitely overreacts, but Man Seeking Woman once again creates a great surreal skit to explain everything. It feels weird, at first, when a girlfriend becomes closer with her boyfriend’s friends, but in the long-run it’s worth being the butt of more jokes. “Horse” addresses a problem that was growing and does a fantastic job of knocking out the awkwardness between Mike and Lucy now rather than dragging it out. What becomes more interesting is Mike’s decision to take Josh’s secrets and pass them along to the rest of their friends, because that’s just a not cool move. It’s one thing for your best friend or small group of best friends to know more about you than anyone else, but there’s always a limit to what can be told to who and Mike seems to overstep that line and getting away with it.
Man Seeking Woman has been off to a strong start this season and is clearly establishing something long-term between Josh and Lucy. Right now the show is hitting all of the beginning points of a relationship and getting the awkward moments out of the way. “Horse” leaves viewers off with a big reveal of Lucy saying to Mike that she loves Josh. That’s a massive development moving forward and it becomes more interesting because Mike knows now also. Will he continue to be cool with his best friend having a serious relationship or will this inspire him to secretly persuade Josh to end things? As the show begins to transition out of Josh and Lucy feeling like a new couple, things seem like they are going to get a little more serious than in the show’s past.
