Major Improvements “Sunday Night with Megan Kelly” Needs to Make

Did you watch Sunday night with Megyn Kelly?  Remember that NBC spent a lot of money to bring Megyn Kelly to 30 Rock but the former Fox News presenter needs to carry out some significant improvements if her shows are going to hit it off. Keep in mind that in September she’ll start hosting a program that will air daily from 9 a.m. The 60 Minutes like show “Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly”, debuted on Sunday night but all indications are that it’s got a long way to go if it’s going to compete with 60 Minutes.

In our humble opinion, Kelly needs to carry out 5 major improvements if she wants her show to gain a significant following.  This article looks at these five areas in detail.

1. Deep Insights

Megyn Kelly’s main promotion for her news magazine show was her big “get”. It was none other than Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. The encounter was on two separate forums at a St. Petersburg panel economic forum discussion, which Kelly moderated and during a one-on-one interview. The downside of the Kelly interview is that it offered no real insights as Putin was able to push away her questions about the involvement of Russia in the 2016 US elections. As a former KGB agent and former head of the FSB, she found it hard to break his icy reserve, which made Kelly’s dramatic showdown attempts fall short and appear as a repetition. She needs to be more insightful when tackling topics that the public needs to know more.

2. Originality

“Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly” needs to improve is when it comes to airing original pieces. The reason is that she did a piece of a drug company allegedly pushing doctors and it’s workers to get consumers to use dangerous pain medication which is only meant for those with cancer. It was solid but quite longer than it was supposed to be. Cynthia McFadden, the correspondent, clearly laid out the issue, while the interview with the whistle blower revealed company’s greed. Its downside is that it was quite familiar to many similar cases of other businesses that have unethical business practices.

3. Precision

The piece on saving elephants in Africa was great but short on giving precise numbers. The indications were that there was a decline in the number of elephants. However, the report failed to cite the number of elephants in the present and past. The part of an American woman who went to work on elephant conservation in Africa took long, but its conclusion that localized efforts to improve the number of elephants did not consider other aspects such as poverty.

4. Quality

The final part failed to show or explain the realities that have made us arrive at our current political situation. It ended up highlighting kids as being cute while talking about how adults should follow the rules that make us civil.

5. Mainstream Journalism Personality

If the show was trying to portray Kelly as a mainstream journalist, it fell short. The reason is that it came across as a piece that was meant to show how everyone should be polite and appeared to talk down to viewers.

Summary

If Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly considers making the above improvements, Kelly will come across as a mainstream journalist, which is what the program is trying to establish. Kelly appears, as she has always been, well poised on camera, which is a plus.
