Tonight was the season finale of The Magicians and while I didn’t like it as much as last season’s, it was still very entertaining.
Umber narrated the “previously on” tag, which covered both seasons and I loved every bit of it. I especially enjoyed the part where he summed up each character in the group with their trope. Part of the reason I love The Magicians is how self-aware it is. Umber even does a bit of Drunk History style voice over. What’s not to love?
Last week we learned about the twenty blank pages in everyone’s books in the library. So, our crew hatches a brilliant plan to stop Umber, the god who created Filory, from destroying the world.
I loved that they lured him to the party with little cakes. The writers make each character so strange and yet, very believable.
We also learned that his brother, Ember, faked his death and spends his time making a new boring world. Quentin tricks him into going to Filory through that little world, and I loved it! I didn’t even consider it, so I’m glad it worked out.
Maybe it’s the magic of this story, but I almost thought everything was okay. Except Julia and Quentin decide that Ember and Umber need to die. So, they do. Who would have guessed that could have consequences? Certainly not Quentin and Julia.
Alice reveals that a universal plumber exists and he can shut all magic off in the universe. Would have been nice to know this before he killed the only source of magic in Filory. Whoops! As they say, the plot thickens. I love that Quentin made himself even easier to hate with this finale. I like him, but he can be very white bread.
Oh, Margo lost an eye, and Fen only returns to Filory to warn Eliot that the fairies have come to take the kingdom. However, the most exciting (yet, predictable) part of it all, is that Julia can make some small magic. I’m sure she will lead the charge in season three. Please let Julia be happy!
Penny and Katie go to the wayside in this finale. What intrigues me is at the end of the episode we see that two months have passed, and Penny was given only three weeks to live. Did Julia’s deal with that magician work? Does the library still exist?
I have a lot of questions for The Magicians writers, but I guess we all must wait until 2018. I’m glad it didn’t end on too big of a cliffhanger like last season. What did you think? What would you like to see in the upcoming season? Leave a comment to let me know!
