Madam Secretary: McCord Children get Bodyguards. Elizabeth Prevents Civil War in Algeria.

Madam Secretary

How would you feel if nothing went according to plan? That’s what happened in tonight’s episode of Madam Secretary. Elizabeth jets off to Algeria to prevent civil war. Henry deals with the fact that their children are in danger. That and he wants to save St. Gabriel’s Monastery from certain destruction by the remaining members of Hizb al-Shahid.

The scene where Professor Arkoun, the man who will replace President Haddad died, didn’t surprise me. The latter thought that the U.S. government killed Ambassador Curtis to tank the deal that will put the professor in his place. It seems that those who are the most paranoid will do the craziest things. Therefore, I completely agree with Russell when he said that Haddad wouldn’t listen to sense. It seems like the word isn’t part of the man’s vocabulary.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Henry agree to give each of their children their security detail at the beginning of the episode. I wish that they could tell their kids why the extra security right off the bat. Though I do understand that they didn’t want them to worry, given that they are focusing on their education. I still don’t quite get why the McCord children are targets of a stalking and hacking. If it has nothing to do with Elizabeth’s job as Secretary of State, then what exactly is it?

I enjoyed the scene where the McCord children are handing over their devices and hearing about their new security details. So love the hashtag humor. Jason’s little rant, though, irked me a little. I mean, yes, he wants to hide his underage drinking secret from his parents (aka the secret Instagram account), but that’s the least of his worries when his life is in danger. After the fake gun prank at his school, which resulted in him almost being arrested, I think that he will start to see sense.

When Henry handed his children their respective devices back, Alison said that she felt like she missed a limb. We live in a world where we tend to depend a lot on technology. If we separate ourselves from it for a certain amount of time, we would feel lost and edgy. Though it’s good to go off the grid every once in a while. Then again, that’s easier said than done.

In the end, Elizabeth managed to avert civil war in Algeria. She convinced General Cherat, who tried to save the monastery, to send President Haddad to The Hague. The general was hesitant at first, saying that it’s treason. When it came down to it, he did the right thing and saved his country from descending into a state of war. Thank you, Madam Secretary and the magic of television. Henry revealed towards the end of the episode that the statue of Matthew in the monastery was a fake. The question is, why would Hizb al-Shahid go through the trouble of blowing up the church if they knew that the statues are forgeries? I do not compute.
