Looks Like David Fincher Isn’t Too Big a Fan of Marvel

David Fincher is an American director of some note. After all, he has directed a number of well-known movies, with examples ranging from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to The Social Network. Furthermore, he has worked on other projects as well such as music videos and TV shows. In particular, Fincher is famous for his thrillers, as shown by Gone Girl, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and House of Cards. Recently, it is interesting to note that Fincher has expressed some less than enthusiastic sentiments about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What Did David Fincher Say about the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

At the time, Fincher was speaking about his new TV show Mindhunter, which is centered around the FBI’s earliest efforts to study serial killers so as to use the resulting information to help them find the culprits in future cases. He praised Netflix, which he said was providing people with a chance to tell stories that would not be possible under the traditional way of doing things in the entertainment industries. While Fincher was saying this, he took a shot at Marvel Cinematic Universe by more-or-less stating that there are a lot of people who are interested in telling more complicated stories than what the Marvel Cinematic Universe permits.

Is David Fincher Justified in His Opinions?

To be fair, Fincher has a point. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a proven success for years and years, which in turn, means that it has a system that has been established for years and years. As a result, when someone is hired to work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they do so at the direction of Kevin Feige, who is responsible for running the franchise, meaning that they are not telling their stories so much as the stories laid out for them. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is nonetheless limiting for people who put a high value on their own sense of creativity.

As for Fincher’s statement about Netflix, he has a point there as well. Netflix has been pouring millions and millions of dollars into the production of new TV shows, which are important for a couple of reasons. First, these new TV shows enable it to stand out from its competitors. Something that has become critical in a time when more and more companies are launching their own streaming services in an effort to compete. Second, these new TV shows ensure that Netflix will have plenty of material to fall back on in case its existing partners chose a different approach for their content, with an excellent example being the recent choice by Disney to focus on its own streaming service. Regardless, the sheer amount of money that Netflix is pouring into its own content means that it is providing new opportunities to creators, which is helped by the fact that Netflix’s business model is so promising that it can continue securing more funding in spite of its massive debts.

Furthermore, it should be noted that the whole system has been changed with the popularization of streaming services. After all, the nature of the business model means that there are fewer costs needed to get the content for the service provider to the consumer, which in turn, means lower costs. Combined with the fact that there is fierce competition with other streaming services as well, it is indeed a promising time for people who want to make something more experimental rather than something tried and true.
