On this week’s episode of Lethal Weapon, Riggs deals with the Anniversary of Maranda’s death, while Murtaugh and Trish butt heads with RJ.
When Dale Reynolds is found murdered in a hotel room from a forced overdose, Riggs and Murtaugh catch the case. Reynold’s wife tells Riggs that a few months ago someone threw a brick through their window and Dale knew who did it and he said he would get a restraining order.
This information leads Riggs and Murtaugh to Ben Garvey. But when they go to question him he runs and grabs a nail gun and pins Riggs to a wall with a nail. Riggs frees himself and ends up tackling Garvey even though Murtaugh told him not to, sending all three of them out of a window and into a dumpster full of nails.
As Riggs gets nails taken out of his body, him and Murtaugh argue. When Riggs is finished they go interrogate Ben Garvey. He says that Dale Reynolds killed his sister Cynthia because he introduced her to Heroin and she died of an overdose, but he did not kill Dale, and he was in church at the time that he died.
Riggs and Murtaugh go to the church to check out Ben’s alibi, while Murtaugh checks in with Bailey, Riggs goes inside to talk to Father Patterson. He says that Ben Garvey set in on mass the night Reynolds was killed and he has the video to prove it.
Riggs gets a text from Murtaugh saying they found the killer’s van. When they get there they find the van blaring music but empty inside, with sinner written on the top of it, just like it was written on Dale Reynolds back. At first Riggs thinks they are too late but then Riggs notices a fresh grave and him and Murtaugh dig just fast enough to save the woman’s life.
When Riggs goes home that night he continues to have flashbacks of him and the bartender he brought home the night before, (We see that in the beginning of the episode) because he feels like he cheated on Maranda.
Unable to take the guilt he leaves and shows up at Roger’s house unannounced, interrupting his family discussion with Trish and RJ (Side note where is Rianne?) about the fact that RJ brought a girl home without him or Trish knowing, which we also saw at the beginning of episode. It’s a fact that RJ doesn’t want to go to Princeton anymore but wants to become a farmer that travels around the world, with his girlfriend Feather.
Riggs invites himself for dinner and puts all the alcohol he brought with him on the table. RJ asks Riggs what he thinks about him not going to college and seeing the world with his girlfriend starting in New Zealand. Riggs tells him the Capital of New Zealand is beautiful and to go for it. He also tells him not to let her go. When Riggs becomes too drunk to drive home Roger sets him up on the couch, where he says to him that he cheated on his wife.
The next day Murtaugh goes to visit the woman he and Riggs saved., her name is Valerie Rausch. Bailey tells him that she was the Social Coordinator at a Senior home. When Cruz and Bailey go to talk to her boss, one of the residents tells Cruz that Valerie killed a resident named Ethel Puckelwitz by smothering her with a pillow.
Meanwhile, Bailey found out that Valerie attended the same church as Ben Garvey. So Riggs and Murtaugh go back to the church to talk to Pastor Patterson and to search the inside of the confessional. While in the confessional Riggs tells Murtaugh that he has been getting drunk and blacking out a lot. Murtaugh gives Riggs a heartfelt speech which he doesn’t hear because he found a microphone hidden in his side of the confessional and left to follow it’s wire. (I thought this moment was both really funny and really sweet.) Murtaugh eventually figures out that Riggs is gone.
Meanwhile, down in the basement Riggs and Pastor Patterson find out that in the maintenance room Ruben, (who Riggs and Murtaugh met earlier in the episode) uses to store things for the soup kitchen, are pictures of the victims that he was stalking.
Back at the station Riggs accidentally runs into his father-in-law, who had been looking for him throughout the episode. Ronnie tells him that he was missed at the service on Friday night to remember Maranda, a year and a day after her death. He also tells Riggs, if he wants to be a drunk he can but he won’t let Riggs blame Maranda for it.
When Father Patterson goes missing, the team figures out that Ruben punished the victims the same way as their crimes and that if Father Patterson knew about Ruben’s mom’s abuse Ruben would hold him accountable too. The team figures out that Rubin went back to his childhood home where his mother died.
When Riggs and Murtaugh get there they bust in just in time to save Father Patterson. Riggs chases Ruben onto the roof where Ruben decides he’s going to jump. Riggs tries to stop him from jumping and ends up going over the edge but hangs onto a pipe. Murtaugh grabs Riggs to pull him up but the pipe he is holding onto starts to break. Riggs tells Murtaugh to let him fall so they don’t both go over the edge but he doesn’t listen. After Riggs punches Murtaugh to try and get him to let go and he doesn’t, they both go over the edge but end up landing in a tree.
At the end of the episode Murtaugh goes over the report of what happened with Captain Avery and told him that it was Riggs who punched him. Also Riggs goes to see Ronnie at a bar and tells him he is starting to forget little things about Maranda and that he thinks it’s best to not see Ronnie and Anna anymore.
At the very end of the episode Roger is looking up what they could do with the money that they had saved up for RJ to go to Princeton but Trish told him not to drain the college fund yet because she has faith RJ will make the right decision. Then RJ tells him that Feather broke up with him. And Roger tells him you will meet someone else, also Riggs brings by a bottle of wine as a thank you to Roger for saving his life and opted for water instead of alcohol.
Overall I think this weeks episode of Lethal Weapon while it had its strong moments was just mediocre.
