‘The Legend of Korra’ comics are a series of comic books that are a continuation of the animated series of the same name that was aired on Nickelodeon between 2012 and 2014. They Were a Trilogy Called ‘Turf Wars’
The graphic novels are actually a trilogy titled ‘Turf Wars’. The first of these was published on July 26, 2017, followed by the second in January 2017. The final installment in the comic trilogy was published on August 1, 2018.
There Were Two Free Comic Book Day Issues
In addition to the trilogy of graphic novels, there were also two free comic book day issues released. The first of these was in ‘Friends for Life’ which was published on May 7, 2016. The second was in ‘Lost Pets’ on May 5, 2018.

The artwork featured in the comics is by comics artist Irene Koh. ‘The Legend of Korra’ comics are published by Dark Horse Comics. This is an American comic book and manga publisher that is based in Milwaukee, Oregon. This company was founded in 1986 by Mike Richardson. Some of the most famous Dark Horse Comics include ‘The Mask’, ‘The American’, and ‘Hellboy’.
The Story is Set in Avatar: The Last Airbender
The setting for both the TV series and the comic books titled ‘The Legend of Korra’ is the fictional world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This was also the setting for the series of the same name created by the same writers. However, the events in ‘The Legend of Korra’ take place 70 years after ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’.
Korra is the Main Character
Just like the name of the comic books suggests, the lead character in the storyline is Korra. She is a headstrong and rebellious teenager who is also Aang’s reincarnation as the Avatar. This character was inspired by Konietzko’s tough sister and Gina Carano, a female MMA fighter. One of the key themes of both the character and the storylines surrounding her is how she transforms to a spiritual being from a brash warrior.
Korra’s Friends Are Called Team Avatar
Another central element to the storylines are Korra’s friends. They are often referred to as Team Avatar. Two of her friends are Mako and Bolin, the bending brothers. While the older brother Mako is a firebender, his younger brother Bolin is an earthbender. Asami Sato is the only non-bender in the lead characters of the comic books and television series. She is the daughter of Hiroshi Sato, a wealthy industrialist. Other main characters include Tenzin, Lin Beifong, Pema, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo, and Rohan. Korra also has a number of animal friends in this series, including Naga and Pabu.
There is Also a Video Game
Following the success of the television series, there were two ‘The Legend of Korra’ video games released. The first of these was in 2014 and simply went by the same name as the TV series and the comic books. The second is called ‘The Legend of Korra: A New Era Begins’. There are also plans to release board games based on the series and the comics.
The Lettering Was Designed by Nate Piekos
Nate Piekos is a freeware and shareware computer font designer and he designed the letter for ‘The Legend of Korra’ comic books. He also goes by the name Blambot and he specializes in display typefaces and script for comic books and other print publications.
