Last Flag Flying: Richard Linklater’s Latest Oscar Buzzing Film

Richard Linklater is at it again. The screenwriter-director has written an adaption to the 2005 book, Last Flag Flying. While the film is not set to be launched until the New York Film Festival in September, there are some interesting facts that we have discovered and decided to share with you. In the grand scheme of things, the film takes on a comedic-drama tone. The film has a star-studded cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Bryan Cranston, and Steve Carell.  After its initial viewing during the film festival, the film will be released to the public on November 3, 2017.

The story revolves around three aging Vietnam veterans who have remained friends over the years while being in different parts of the country. Each character has a distinct personality that dictates how they will be contributing to the flow of the movie. Fishburne’s character, Mueller is quiet and measured. He is very subtle and calculated in his thoughts and movements. Doc, who is played by Carell, is very soft-spoken and easy going. He is the one that brings the balance to the group. Sal (Cranston) is that one who is constantly off the hinge and completely unfiltered. You never know what he is going to say or do at any given time.

The three friends are reunited for the sacred purpose of laying Doc’s son to rest, a soldier who had died during the invasion of Iraq.

In tune with the genius of Linklater, this movie houses a plethora of realities moods. There is nothing one-dimensional about the work that Richard Linklater produces, and he definitely does not disappoint in this film if the directing and filmography measures up to the writing. The movie is hilariously funny, celebratory, quietly shattering, heartbreaking, expansive, meditative and more. As you progress through this movie, it will give you much of what the book did, a complete experience. That is something that is lacking in many contemporary movies, and they yearnings of serious moviegoers did not fall on deaf ears. Mr. Linklater definitely heard you.

What makes this movie so good is the fact that Linklater is able to merge all of the moods, personalities, and emotions in this experience and yet create an experience that flows like water downstream – complete effortless. This accomplished not only because of great writing and directing, but the cast is absolutely phenomenal in pulling off their roles. When you work with this type of talent, it is expected that you will produce something worthy of an Oscar, and this movie will definitely demand some attention from the Academy.

The fact that Last Flay Flying with being the opening movie at the New York Film Festival speaks volumes to what those who have had the privilege to preview the film think of it. Opening night at such a large forum is the grandest stage for a new creation to be on. When you consider the fact that the movie is premiering to the public in early November, it is easy to postulate that there will still be a buzz around the movie when voting takes place for the Academy Awards – a good position to be in.
