Did You Know that UB40’s “Red Red Wine” is a Cover of a 1967 Neil Diamond Song?

One of my favorite all-time songs from the 80s is UB40’s “Red Red Wine.”  It’s the kind of song that when you hear it playing on the radio you’d never, ever turn it off.  In fact it’s probably in my top 10 songs that I’d “never turn off” if playing on the radio.  I think my number one in that arena is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears.  Anyway,  let’s get on with “Red Red Wine.”   Why did I never know this about the song?

“Red Red Wine” was written by Neil Diamond in 1967.   UB40 covered it in 1983 in a light reggae style and it reached #1 on the Billboard 100.  Diamond has stated that it is one of his favorite covers and he often performs the song in the UB40 style instead of the original version.  Am I just ignorant for not knowing this?  And why did I think that “Red Red Wine” came out in 1987?  I guess you learn something everyday.

Put it this way.  It changes nothing about anything other than the fact I like the song even more now that I know Neil Diamond had something to do with it.  What a fantastic song.  And yes, here’s the video below:
